gear ratios ?

ok i have a 323 w/ lx engine but im using my stock 323 tranny reason y is because few months back i raced a friend of mine w/ an escort lx with a protege lx bp 1.8 dohc engine and lx tranny. He had a headers, intake, wires, custom piping, muffler. and all i had was the bp motor and my 323 tranny. My car weighs 2,300 and his is about 2,400 if im not mistaken. i raced him at a light. I was behind this guy cuz there was a car blocking my way i had to make my way in. by the time i shift mine to third i was almost 2 cars ahead of him. Is it because of the 323 tranny???

can someone tell me which one has a better gear ratios. thx
