engine size

im thinking of buying a 323, but im not sure about the engine size. the hood says it is a 1.5 liter, however the guy tells me its actually a 1.8. the car has a tach, no sunroof, and the engine code is BP01. can anyone tell me the size?

the BP01 block should be the 1.8L DOHC BP engine.
Now, 323's did come with this engine as an option, on what i beleive was the 323 LX in the USA, or atleast in Cali. I have seen a 323 with the identical interior and engine as my LX Pro, was even the same color...lol

The early 1990 & 1991 Protege's I believe were called 323's before Mazda formally called the 4 door 323 a Protege. I think my neighbor has a 92 LX DOHC and on the rear trunk it says Protege but Mazda 323 in small text below it. The 1990-1994 323 is a 1.6L 8 valve SOHC Hatchback, engine code B6E. The car you are looking at should be the Protege(323) DX 1.8 sohc. Most sohc's didn't come with a tach though, so thats a plus. You might want to spring for the LX with the DOHC, the engine revs up nicely.

If you saw BP01 on the head, then it's a 1.8 16-valve SOHC. That's what I have, and that's what's on the head. I'm not sure what the code is for a DOHC.
