CV joint...

Ok new guy here, just got a 93 protege for 300 bucks because they think the cv joint is shot. Now it is going bad, it clicks when I turn right and thats it. What part am I needing to look for? It is a 5 speed and I am learning on these cars. I have a 350 Formula Firbird that I know inside and out, I want to get this way with these cars as well. Can some people give me a suggestion as to what action to take next? ThanX

Welcome to the club. we're not all ricers BTW.
You need the whole axle really.
Its called many different names. CV shaft, CVaxle, Drive axle, Half shaft the list goes on.......
You probably could get the bad cv joint rebuilt but why bother, just replace the whole axle, you're going to take it out anyways.
A new one is probably like 160$ or so.
Some people do have troubles with replacing them though. Apparently sometimes the transmissions don't like to let you take the axle out.

I never said anything about everybody being a ricer. Trust me it makes no difference what people drive. As long as they beef up the motor and keep there mouth shut about it everybody is cool to me. Anyways I wasn't sure of the setup, I didn't know if turning right and hearing that clicking was a different part than turning left and hearing the clicking. Thanx though, I will be replacing it shortly, my buddy does these cv joints all the time.

It was a joke. We get some guys in here that are "American V8 rwd guys" because their Girlfriend, or wife or kid has one of these cars and they ask some questions and whatnot, but they don't always get the answers they were looking for, or thought they were looking for. They get pissedoff, call us ricers, say we're wasting our money on these cars etc etc....
Anyways, Like I said it was a joke, glad you're here, hope you can learn alot about your car, and fix the problem.

I figured it was a joke, anyways I don't care who drives what etc. I just love engines and always gotta fix em' It seems to click under acceleration, and one more thing do you know why the oil dipstick has all the lines on it?? What is full? What is low? Mine shows multiple lines and then what looks like a 0.8 so it actually looks like this..... | | 0.8 | | something like that.......confusing to me....mine on my firebird is just ......... FULL|XXXXXXXXX|ADD so whats all the marks for??
THANX

If it clicks when turning right its the driver side CV joint...really best to replace them both though...different marks are for full hot and full cold

i've heard the lx axles are supposedly harder to take out since they have this thing, uhhh something like a torque thing i forget. but if its the dx, as far as i know you just need a prybar to pop the inner part of the axle from the differential. the lock nut on the hub is a bitch to get off. you gotta get the stake dent out and even then, its hard to turn.

Well I got underneath today and noticed that the passenger side outside boot was torn. So I stuffed a bunch of grease in it for now. Won't stay for long but couldn't hurt, anyways I didn't see much else other than that torn boot on the cv shaft. Best to replace both sides I am assuming?

i have a CV issue. you do have time before the CV goes. it is easier to replace the whole axle. The big issue when pulling axles is hyrolock. so drain the fluid.

oh my god you guys dont know what you are talking about just pull out the axle with the cv joint on it and put it in a vice ( the alxe) and get a hammer and hit the f#@%# off it will come off there is a sir clip in the middle holding the cv on to the axle it will break you cant get to it so you have to break it some times it pops off then go buy a new cv and put it on

the problem they are referring to is getting the whole axle to come away from the tranny...sometimes it can be difficult.

Used a pry bar and some muscle and it was out, no sweat. Driver side looked real good like it had been replaced a few thousand miles earlier so I left it alone.
