1.8 323

OK then.... I have heard from some people that the BP 1.8 will bolt up to my 323, but I have also been told that it wont bolt up because the block is to long and that it wont be worth my time or money. I ask because the ol' girl need some new zip and I like those GTX motors just from what I have read about them. So basicaly, will it or wont it bolt up / what required to make it work?

Thank you to all who can help.

Iv'e pondered the same idea, but have also been told two different stories. So it will bolt in??? Or does it need any fabrication to fit??

i can't be sure if it bolts "right" in, nothing really bolts "right" in, as there are always games to play but in either case, you have a choice...

if you have a 1.6 in it now, then the next step would be a B6T engine (turbo GTX 130hp, but can rise fast with a few mods)
these are found in the 88-89 323 GTX models here in the US.

if you have the 1.8L in it now, then the GTX/GTR BPT engine is the next step (turbo GTX 180hp / GTR 220hp) These are only found overseas and never made it to the US market. (quite sad infact)

by doing it this way, you could essentially use your existing tranny to start, but it's recommended to swap em once the power has been upped. and remember to get the wiring harness and ECU for which ever engine you get.

Snart, like mazdaspeedwest said, "nothing" is bolt in like the Hondas do. One can fit the B6 turbo or the BPT engine but some engine mountings have to be fabricated in some cases. I'm not sure about the laws in the States about engine swaps from 1.6 to 1.8L. Over here, we have to re-register the engine number on the title and pay some under-table money. Plus my original engine was BP5 (DOHC 1.5L) and now it's a BPT. The Mazda guys here buy the BPT half-cuts (literally bumper to the gearshift front cut) for our transplant for an avg market price of US$730 equiv. We get more extras for our money.
My engine mountings at the bottom (f+r) had to be modified. The mouting at the timing best side can be used (depending) and the mounting at the tranny has to be fabricated. The J-spec BPT 4WD gearbox is not rational and logical to use. Thus one has to chuck the BPT 4WD gearbox and find either the Escort GT gearbox or use back yours if it's a 1.8L. My setup is using 1.6L B6 turbo gearbox cuz it was easier to find. It's a closer ratio compared to 1.8L. The 1.6 B6T gearbox is smaller so the gaps have to be filled. I dunno how but my mechanic did it.
Check out my ride at my signature.

You are absolutely right. I'm using the BPT engine in my BG chassis. It will also fit the KH chassis Escort GT. Yes in AUS & NZ, Ford Escort sports the BPT GTX engine with 4WD. Man wish I could get my hands on one. The BPT engine has also fitted into the 2nd gen or BA chassis in Malaysia.
