How about an October meet for Edmonton folks??

At the Red Deer meet, neuromancer suggested we have another local meet before the snow starts to fly. I thought that was a great idea as that would sort of make up for the guys who missed out.

So I may as well get this started so people can think and plan around it with lots of time.

How does either the 5th or 19th of October sound to everyone for a Mazda meet? I was going to say Protege Meet but that gosh darn nice looking Miata keeps showing up :D.

I figured either before or after the Thanksgiving weekend should be okay. Is the 5th too close to the last one? Also it is a Saturday so we have a little more time to chat and gawk compared to the evenings, since the days are getting shorter now.

We'll decide where when we agree on the date.

mesoh September-12th-2002 01:07 PM

i'll come up for the meet, but i think you would be better off with 5th of oct just incase the snowcomes early this year

That'd be great. What about a cook-out? Say Hawrelak Park...near the river where the fire pits are...all we need do is bring wood and weiners and such?

Alternatively, how about a drive to somewhere? The Miata has a great route that takes about 3 hours starting at Gateway Park with a mid-run stop in Seba Beach ultimately ending up at Soda Jerks in St. Albert. Total time with a half hour stop in the middle is about 3.5 - 4 hours...a nice way to spend an afternoon.

I agree with both. Need to have the meet around something, rather than just standing around in a parking lot looking at each other's cars. A BBQ would be good as long as the weather would hold.

I though a fun time might be had at Whitemud Amusments, go-karts anyone?? :)

If I can make it I will.

Ohhhh boy, I love that idea!!! Anytime we can get to drive as a group would be so much fun after doing the same thing this past weekend in Red Deer. :wee: :wee:

Funny thing, Richard, I was even thinking the same sort of thing about the cookout but thought it was a silly idea.

fraay September-12th-2002 08:41 PM

What the heck am I going to do by myself in my car for 3 hours?! The only friend who would be willing to drive around with me for no reason for 3 hours.. and doesn't think I'm absolutely crazy because of how much I love this car... has his own p5 to drive.. :)

fraay September-12th-2002 08:57 PM

I just talked to a friend.. she said she'd come with me.. she's the most supportive person when it comes to me and my car other then Jas... :)

Her and I are taking my baby on her first mini camping trip this weekend.. I'm so excited! My car is probably going to hit 1000 clicks tonight too.. so I can start driving like a wild woman!

Ramble ramble.. :)

Does this mean that you guys don't want us Calgarians there? Actually Protege_Cat and I would love to come but the middle of the month would be better for us.

FireBall September-12th-2002 10:59 PM

Hey, I'm up for the trip, pending I'm not doing anything to the car that weekend.
If anything I'll come to the cook out for sure.:bounce:
whats the total km for the trip?

Richard I think the drive looks great. I have been on the north side of Wabamum lake where my friend has a cabin. Been on the south side too when I did some work at the Sundance plant many years ago but at that time did not have my P5. The north side was hilly and winedy (spelling?).

As for the go cart thing, although probably fun, I would rather drive my P5 :D.

Personally I would go for the drive and Soda Jerks.

Hey Jayrox, all from the south are invited. Didn't I see mesoh say he would come up here for this? Cool.

spikyC September-13th-2002 02:14 AM

Yeah i would be up for the drive.... sounds like lots of fun...

Just hope i don't have something come up....
I already had to miss the alberta meet!!

Brycer79swoman September-13th-2002 12:11 PM

Count us in! Open fire, hotdogs and MARSHMELLOWS?! we are sooo there! :bounce: :bounce: :bounce:

spikyC September-14th-2002 06:09 PM

Or is there a good place to stop along the way that we could have a fire and cook some hot dogs for supper or something???

I don't know.... why don't we try to do both... maybe just shorten the drive??

I think i would rather do that!!

sylvanlights September-14th-2002 10:15 PM

New to the form and would love to meet everyone. Unfortunately my time is limited. I am up at a course in Edmonton that weekend, but ca not spend the day driving around with you. Is it possible to maybe do the weiner roast AFTER the drive? I might be free by then ... just a thought.

-=Doug

skyhawk174 September-15th-2002 01:19 AM

Okay so it looks like we are doing the drive thing. Richard have you ever done both? Problem would be finding the spot to roast don't ya think? Setting up and then roasting would take a couple of hours unless we make it really quick. We could bring a gas burner so no waiting to get a fire going. Hmm maybe we can do that.

skyhawk174 September-15th-2002 01:38 PM

Actually my neighbour chopped down a tree earlier this summer so maybe I can bum some from him. I had a bunch of cedar crap and other pieces of 2x4 I was using but now all gone up in smoke.

By the way, Richard, did you get my email?

skyhawk174 September-16th-2002 11:43 AM

Okay sounds good. Lets lock in the date for October 5, 2002.

If we are doing the cookout thing we would also need a few things least of which is a comitment from the people coming. That way we can assign people to bring the fixings and stuff so one person if not swamped with having to get everything. I think we can then divvy (spelling?) up the cost and spread it among all who are there. Does that sound fair to everyone?

sylvanlights September-16th-2002 12:11 PM

Once again I must ask-request-beg that the cookout be at a time/place that I may be able to make it. I realize the universe does not revolve around me alone, but I would really like to meet you guys/gals and see you cars. I was unfortunately not able to meet anyone at the Red Deer meet (I arrived just as everyone was rolling off the lot and heading to Sylvan) but would really like to make it out this time! At this time I don't know what times I will be available, but if you were to hold the cook-out somewhere in/around Edmonton I should be able to make it.

Thanks again, I hope I can make it.

-=Doug

Oh, a little about my car:

2002 Midnight blue Protege 5
Loaded 5-speed w/ moonroof
Tinted rear windows
Front deflector

That's it for now, but would really like to add the leather seats and a few other things to make this a great car - not that it isn't already!

skyhawk174 September-16th-2002 01:09 PM

Hey Doug, when next are you up to Edmonton? We could always get together with some of the other guys and have a mini meet over coffee or something. I know several of the other guys are up for that. In fact two of the otehr guys who just so happen to also have bue P5s would come. They were not in Red Deer as both had wedding commitments, one was playing music at one and the other guy was getting married. Pretty flimsy excuses if you ask me :p :D.

sylvanlights September-16th-2002 01:29 PM

Thanks for the reply Chris! I will be up in Edmonton that weekend (October 4-6th) for a course so if I can't manage to make it out to the drive/BBQ with all of you, would anyone be able to meet Sunday evening somewhere? If it is at all possible, I would still like to make it out to the BBQ. I know I can't make the drive. I am really looking forward to getting some ideas for my car, and seeing everything in living colour makes so much more sense.

Thanks again everyone!

-=Doug

mesoh September-16th-2002 07:35 PM

sorry all but I can't make it up for that weekend:( but i will see you in the spring if not before

FireBall September-17th-2002 12:08 AM

still waiting for Richard to adress the km of the trip, and is there possably a larger map you could e-mail me so I can print it up nice and clear?:D
Hey, Richard
how the "fuz" situation on the root as well, will we be able to let the cars scream every now and then?

As for the police, there's RCMP, Parkland County Mountie, and Band Police...and as many years as the Miata club has been using this route...we've never seen one. There's always a first...but let's keep our fingers crossed. You can run and hide anytime you like, however, don't get lost.

Yeah, with my luck it would be a police convention on the roads when we are going through :D

90210brandon September-17th-2002 12:39 PM

Don't forget Elbow Falls on Friday in October Sky!

skyhawk174 September-18th-2002 10:57 AM

Okay, I'm in. I'll also bring a friend since my wife will be out of town. She was not happy when I told her I was going on a trip as she loves this stuff. Oh wel, I'll have to make it up to her. I think she believed me when I said it was not a girlfriend :D. My friend just bought a new Focus so maybe he'll see how much fun this is and maybe his next one will be a Mazda.

So let's get some commitment here as we should also start assigning the responsibility for bringing stuff.

I'll bring some wood for the fire, hmmm will have to look at getting some straps to hold it down in the back. Richard, I know some parks don't allow you to bring in wood, is that park like that?

Here is a list of what I think we need:

Wood, fire starting stuff
Smokies/hot dogs
Doggie holding stuff (skewers)
Ketchup, mustard, relish, onions
Napkins, paper plates
Drinks (soft), coolers

If we can keep it simple then we can do the stuff quickly and be on our way.

Brycer79swoman September-18th-2002 12:56 PM

cookout

bryce and i can bring the ketchup/mustard/relish and chop up some onions!!!! so count us in!!!

danielle

skyhawk174 September-18th-2002 01:12 PM

Ooops forgot something. We need

BUNS!!

Potato salad too or chips. Chips probably better since don't have to worry about salmonella.

skyhawk174 September-18th-2002 02:35 PM

Wow, what a good idea. I forget this is new. I am accustomed to what I do with my other club. Sorry 'bout that. I like you idea Richard, no hauling lots of stuff. So no bumming sausages from anyone else :D.

Brycer79swoman September-18th-2002 02:54 PM

Fire Food

Okay, then we are to bring our own eats...*smiles* i'm not worried...JUST EXCITED!!!

sandman September-18th-2002 02:58 PM

Wow...

Leave for 5 days to get married and go on a little road trip to banff, and the west canada section explodes!!!

Assuming I'm not working on the 5th - (it's far enough in advance it shouldn't be a problem to get it off) - count us in!!

There wasn't enough midbnight blue representation in red deer so I better help make up for it this time around!!

I like the bring your own food idea for the roast too.. mmmmm european weenies and cheddar smokies... gotta love it..

crazy - I never knew there could be such a good route in the Thorsby area... I'm there all the time visiting family! 'C'mon Shell! Lets go visit grandpa... the LONG way!!' ;)

skyhawk174 September-18th-2002 04:48 PM

Hey Jason, welcome back . I bet you had withdrawal symptoms for the forum while you were away. Well okay maybe for 2 minutes :D. Hope you had a great time in Banff. Never stayed any time there but I want to go camping sometime soon.

Banff was great - it was busy but it wasn't crazy busy so we didn't feel too hectic or anything.

Strange, I thought there would have been more zoom zoom spots to exercise the p5 on the highway, but there really wasn't too much!! :( Only real twisties we encountered were the area in the mountains just after the 'wind gusts' sign, and i'll tell ya - the wind was VERY gusty.. Too much to risk much more than the speed limit. I couldn't believe how much the wind was knocking the car around.

As for withdrawal.. nothing the whole time, till we got back into edmonton, and i was like.. i wonder how much catching up I have to do on the pclub.. turns out there wasn't too much. :)

As for the 5th, we're definitely in, i made sure that I have the day booked off work.

skyhawk174 September-19th-2002 10:08 AM

Okay, so we can go with Richard's plan of meeting at Gateway Park at around 12:30 pm and then carry on from there.
