I'm working on building Calgary a website for resources, gallery etc, so there is a central place for Calgary-specific information.

So again, welcome feel free to ask questions or just hang out, its all good.

Hey, you're not Sir Nuke! And why get a website together, when 'you' can use this one. Why, make more work for yourselves? Richard (90&00) will make 'you' your own section like EPC. Why make your own site? The knowledge base is here. Why spread it so thin by making another site. TOprotege.whatever and MPSport.net is silly if you ask me. Why don't 'we' all come to ONE site?

but for photo galleries, member profiles, meeting minutes, classified etc, it makes sense to have a stand alone website. the calgary and edmonton miata clubs (granted, they're big clubs) have really damn good websites, much more information than what could be presented on this site efficiently.

now, with how small the club would be, i would say that spending the cash to host a website and all would be a bit overkill but it could also help the club to grow as well.

based on sclub size though, edmonton and calgary (hell, and red deer) chapters of an alberta protege club may have been better but edmonton's already established themselves. mind you, they've got many more members as well.

I still don't see a defining line as to 'why?'. But hey, 'you' do what cha' want. The reason above is why I haven't moved to the MPSport.net site. I get everything I need here and I can't see why 'you' couldn't put links to your own site to look at your cars or 'whatever'. But like I said, "whatever." no worries dude. there's just a sense of identity to having a club's own corner of the world. like a clubhouse. i can easily see why vancouver and toronto have their own, they have this *huge* base of people, enough to justify their own board and full site.

90210brandon December-13th-2002 02:09 PM

I disagree. The fact that there is a larger population here is true but everyone can still use the website because it could handle the traffic, especially in this day and age. If anything, the knowledge base would just get bigger and better only benefiting 'us'. Do 'we' really need an 'identity'. That's why there are so many problems in this world...like I said: "Just my thoughts and not yours."

i see your point. sometimes (i've seen this happen here with this site vs. protege5.com) you end up with a sort of rivalry and redundancy of information.

maybe the edmonton people can chime in about how well their site is working out for them. i can't get to it from work for some reason. :o

Thanks. I agree, lets wait and converse with EPC and see how 'their' doing!

Last time I checked, Sir Nuke didn't wander into westend Canada, so I though I would do it on his behalf.

As for the other point, I see this as a forum, great for conversations, but hell for actuall resource of information. What I'm thinking is a centralized place for Calgary specific, links, resources, meet information, member gallery, etc. There would be a forum link that would come straight here.

Thoughts?

90210brandon December-13th-2002 03:41 PM

If that's what everyone wants and wants to pay for, then knock 'yourselves' out. Another site that links you to another?!? Great...If you want to have a real conversation then great, then get away from the computer. Sorry, I am a little negative because 'no one' wants to have a real conversation, 'they' just want it to have it at 'their' convenyence(sp?). I don't like that. Things are getting to impersonal. Anyhoo, like I said, "just my thoughts..."

Snype451 December-13th-2002 03:56 PM

Everyone is allowed an opinion I also agree that things are getting impersonal.

Either way, I have a server and (appently some spare time or a life i'm not using) so I thought I would learn something fun (PHP, MYSQL) so if I can create a website all the power right? It can't hurt tha cause at any rate.

i think a specific website is good for the more static information (profiles, schedules, galleries, links to sponsors etc.) with a link to here for the dynamic communication.

Thanks for the welcoming Snype451, been lookin forward to it. We should try to meet up before Christmas. A website would be a good idea, but if we are gonna pay for it, theres no real point. We could probably use Shaw if anyone else has Cable and work with it from there. All we really want is to get this Calgary group noticed and maybe find a few more members. Images and so forth would be nice to have on our own site, but its true, the information has been repeated many times all over the net.

I think alcoholiday is on the right track for a website. But I still dont believe that we should pay for a site that only has our profiles and images. I think finding a free host is the best way to go.

90210brandon December-13th-2002 04:10 PM

I agree with all of you but maybe a 'link' would be better put here to lead to 'your' site. I am curious if Richard can do that for you. Probably. It would be like a filter, all the better to direct everyone. I believe anyway.

Hong Kong Fever December-13th-2002 04:13 PM

I think the link is a good idea, but someone needs to build the site. Anyone good with computers and the web??

I'm good with both those. As for the site it all depends how nice you want it to be. Static is easy, dynamic is harder, content mangement is crazy.
