What I was saying is that in the automotive field they are called engines not motors, the first thing they teach you in automotives is the that motors are electric and engines are internal combustion. I've never seen a ad for a car line call there engines a motor it's always engine displacement or engine not motor displacement or motor nor is a wiper motor called a wiper engine. Tell you what go to mazda canada's web page or to mazda usa's page and look up spec's on their cars and you tell me what they call it, is it an engine or is it a motor.

Lets not even talk about cars anymore, go to your local hardware store and look at a lawn mowers, grab a tag from one that is electric and one that is gas powered, and see what the call the part that powers each one. I would bet that the one that is electric is called a motor and the one that runs off gas is called an engine.

Maybe I was being a smart ass but I would hope that 99&00 protege would be able to take it as much as everyone here knows he like to give it.

You are right the proteges have lots of motors in them, but I would say they only have 1 engine!

I mentioned North Hill in the original post because (1) I will be staying downtown for a while so North Hill is close by; and (2) my dealer in Toronto has e-mailed my records over to North Hill; and (3) didn't someone mention discount at North Hill on the board?!

If anyone have suggestions for particular dealer with good service, or horror stories about dealers who are adverse to mods, please let this newbie know! (I will be getting short shift installed before coming to Calgary, so I don't want to get into trouble at dealers who think a light bulb can kill warranty!)

Thanks again for looking up the definition of motor but I thought that Davard covered this when he looked it up, but I like yours better it's more clear.

It looks to me like anything that imparts motion could called a motor. So if you or I where to push a car we then would be a motor, but still would call myself human. I would say that motor means motion, like if your badly hurt one of the things they check is your motor functions or motor skills. As for motor vehicle by definition it would a vehicle that moves and the reason it moves by 1. an internal combustion engine or 2. electric motor.


The other part to the definition talks about what could impart this motion, a small compact engine b : INTERNAL COMBUSTION ENGINE; especially : a gasoline engine or a rotating machine that transforms electrical energy into mechanical energy.

What follows the two words internal combustion is always engine never motor. So in 95% of the cars out there the part that makes the vehicle move gets it's power by internal combustion there for it's an engine.

Okay to get this back on topic, the only thing I find with the block heater is the stupid cord being in the front.

So what I want with my block heater is to have the receptacle behind the Mazda logo. I am thinking that Mazda should have made the logo a flip down door and the plug would be there so you can plug in your extension. That way you won't have the stupid cord dangling all over the place when you are driving. How come no one has come up with this idea?

I saw someone who had mounted a male receptical under their bumper, I thought that was a pretty nifty idea.

Don't feel bad about going to North Hill. As you said, there is the discount on parts (although I haven't tied it out yet). So far, they seem to have the most consistent positive reviews on this board of the 3 dealers in Calgary, and they are very close to downtown (few minutes walk). I bought my car there and get it serviced there, so far no complaints. One thing in particular - if you have an issue and are halfway nice about how you complain, they go out of their way to fix the problem.

The guys that installed my block heater at Kramer installed it so the cord hangs out the front through the bumper grill. It's worn away the paint nicely. Thanks Kramer :mad:

Mine tucks(sits) into the grill above the 'flying M'. There's is a perfect spot for it to sit there when it is not in use and you can't see it from the outside. When you need it, you just pull it out. It's perfect. My P5 has like a little shelf there. I am pretty sure all Protege's are that way. Mine was an included 'option' that I got from Northhill. If you have any questions let me know. I have to drop off the club list at Northhill (which I'll probably do today). If you want I'll suggest to Ron, Ryan, or Shawn that if an MP3 comes in from Ontario and she asks for a block heater, to install it the same way. (I'll show them too, to make sure they know) I am sure you would not be disappointed.

Do you have to open your hood to get it out then? Mine came with a cap that keeps it clean and tucked against the gril so it doesn't move. Really, as long as it doesn't rub and it lets you get access to it I would think its all the same.

Hey Mike I think when we met that time in Calgary, we had a look and compared yours and mine and from what I recall, yours was on the right (looking from the front) and mine was on the left. I think my routing is better as it keeps it out of the way and on that shelf. Maybe you can reroute yours?

I think I am going to move it to the lower grill and lock it there with some zipties. I'll buy a cover for it as I know Canadian Tire sells them for like $3.00. I really don't want to be opening my hood each time I need it.

Good memory Chris. It is on the right (looking from the front) and it's about in the same spot as Snype's. However, mine hangs out and is lower in the grill. I've tried pulling it back further, but it still rests on the bumper. Short of totally removing the cord and moving it, there's not much else I can do.

Dion, I'd like to see where yours is again. I think Chris had his in the same spot as yours, but I wasn't sure how easy that was to get out without opening the hood.

Mine's located in the 'shelf' under the hood. I think thats the perfect spot since it's hidden throughout the summer, and when old man winter settles down in our neck of the woods, all i have to do is pop the hood, pull the cord out to the length i want and close the hood again. (The closed hood keeps the cord length from changing what i picked)

It hangs down onto the upper grill so if it does rattle/rub/move, it's against the grill and not any part of the bumper or anything else painted. I make sure I make the hanging portion of the cord nice and short though, to keep it from moving around at all.

I wouldn't have it anyplace else and in fact, I would go out of my way to move it if it was.
