How old is the car? Simple maintenance would be the place to start.

Simple change your driving habits to accelerating slower and shifting sooner.

The correct tire pressure.

A clean air filter and new spark plugs.

Changing oil to full synthetic oil.

Any other mods or bolt ons will probably cost more than the subtle boost in mileage.

I have a 2009 and I switched to mid-grade rather than regular fuel. I also stopped going to the cheaper fuel chains. I also try to shift at around 2000 RPMs. I believe this has helped a lot as I was getting 26 mpg, and now it's around 32 mpg

Higher octane fuel isnt going to help mileage or power. All octane dose is is determine how good it is at preventing engine knock. Use what the car is supposed to run on because I highly dought your engine is knocking. If it is, take it to the dealer.

I have a 2010 Mazda 3 sport (hatchback) with a 2.5 engine. 18-22 mpg is what I ordinarily get on in-town driving, with 28-32 on the highway; this has been the case wince we bought it, new. Automatic shift and air conditioning take a toll, I think, as do winter temperatures. Things were better with the Corolla we traded in (a 1.6 engine), but I like the pickup and ease of acceleration in this car.
