Various beatings

The other day I was out with my oldest son (15). We're driving through town, I see this Mitsu Galant GTX with Michigan plates that has been hit in the rear (left rear quarter all crumpled up and rusty, no rear bumper cover). Eventually I end up next to the guy at a light. I didn't have it in mind to race him, the light turned green and I pulled away at a reasonable rate. He's pulling up with me (different from how I had observed him driving), so I speed up a little more, he speeds up too so I decide to hit it. I take her up to redline and upshift, even though I did a rolling start I am ahead of him. I realize I am going a bit fast so I slow down (don't want a ticket). My son told me I was ahead of the guy all the way. I just don't know if the GTX model has the V6 or not. Help from the Mitsu guys?

Then yesterday I am on my way back from picking up my van from the ex-in-laws (who basically stole it when my ex died, it took me three months and lawyer bills to get it back). I was towing a U-Haul trailer with my bike in it, driving across I-64 on the West VA Turnpike. I'm doing a comfortable 70 around the curves and come up on a Civic with some ridiculous small wheels and a rear wing. Next curve the guy brakes like mad while I sail around. Must suck getting passed by a van with a trailer! Oh yeah, it's a Mazda (of course) MPV.

The MPV is the only van-like thing I would ever consider buying.

Yeah, proves my contention from way back that most people can't drive worth beans in a twisty condition.

scotty878, I have four ( a man needs his toys) but the one I used for this trip was my '87 Honda CBR1000F Hurricane. I've owned it from new, only has around 15,700 miles. She's a little rough around the edges due to some accidents, but still hauls. I got around 40 mpg on the trip.

What about a 5? MPV's are pretty sweet as far as mini vans go. I wish they still made the 4wd ones though

I've never heard of a GTX galant....the only specialty galants I know of are VR4's and GTZ's....the GTZ's are V6 and pretty strong.

Probably was a GTZ, I am old and getting senile. It was probably an auto though, as the guy didn't seem to have much to hang with me (I could hear his engine getting busy).

anarchistchiken, I have had two MPVs (original '91 RWD w/V6 and current '01 FWD V6). You are right, they are sweet vans. I do miss being able to light up the rears though, if I did it right I could oversteer that puppy (the '91) around a corner.

the GTZ is actually a peppy car. They use the bigger V6 from the montero sport XS.....automatic only though. I remember before the Evo showed up the GTZ was the fastest car mitsubishi sold.

Dang. Faster than the Eclipse turbo models? Or are we just referring to sedans?

eclipse turbos havent been sold in the us since 2000 I believe.... I don't mean fastest car in mitsu's history. Just at that time.

p.s. 210bhp eclipse vs 248bhp galant = galant would win in a straight line race...stock for stock. The V6 pulls hard from stop to finish where the 2.0L has a lot of flat spots (off the line and up top).
