lost to a vw

its only been 2 months since learning how to drive a stick. i was making a left turn (green left turn light was mine) but the vw golf in the right turning lane in front of me decides he/she is not going to brake and accelerates through the right on red. well i bolt it from 2nd gear and got ahead of it w/o a problem. went to 3rd and i could hear it behind me revving up. i was in 4th gear and decided that i could win in 4th, when i finally hear the sound of a BOV that i didnt hear before and thought, oh damn the piece of trash is turbo'd. it takes off infront of me and i slow down because i had more cars in my lane (and the light ahead was already yellow anyway). it speeds through the light and i never see it again. i'm happy to lose in a stock protege than to win in a turbo vw. next time i'll def shift to 5th.

Don't feel bad those things have 180 hp stock with a just a chip it boost up to 214 and 247 lbs of torqe unfortunately the only car we stand up to is the 2.slow that VW has in golfs and jettas. The only way u would of taken it is with a turbo or supercharger.

Besides, he sounds like a dangerous idiot - you handled the situation well (IMHO).

By 5th gear the race should be over anyway. Someone won a;ready and no one cares to find out if you could take 'em in 5th gear.

Well, maybe 180 hp if it's a Mark IV. The Golf GTI (I am assuming, unless it was a TDI--turbo diesel, which are slow as molasses) didn't have that much hp in previous generations. I think the third gen was 160 hp, and a little less for earlier marks. Despite hp ratings, they are still heavy, heavy cars.

Still, you handled the situation well.

....personally, I've always wanted a GTI. Way back in high school when Nirvana was just breaking into the big time, the 16V was the hot ticket. Everyone wanted either one of those, or a Mustang 5.0L.

The GTI (recent ones) comes in two flavors - narrow angle V6 (VR6), and as mentioned, 1.8L turbo. Neither is slow. If you are going up against a Golf and intend to win, check to make sure that it doesn't have a GTI badge on the rear. Or, pick a tight course with lots of curves! IMO, handling is the Protege's biggest advantage over the other sport compacts out there.

Yeah, the pro handles extremely well, but the GTI is pretty good too. It's a pretty powerful vehicle straight-line, or curved.

some golfs have 1.8t engines two and be carful for the ones that have been chipped even a TDI that is chipped will stomp on one of our cars and VR6 just leave them alone.
