Car rack to carry Bikes/Kayaks/Snowboards

Currently I have the adapter brackets from mazda and a yakima ankle biter for my bikes. I would like to carry two kayaks at the same time but using the ankle biter there is no room.

I am thinking about replaceing my current rack with a new one. Does any body make anything that fits into the rails that the roof rack uses? I would prefer not to put anything on the paint.

What do you use and can you post pics?

This will be going on a 02' Protege 5

Thanks

I believe either Yakima or Thule do. Check their websites. i have seen them but they are pricey.

2 kayaks and 2 bikes? I haven't heard of any thing, but Yakima is one of the top rack manufacturers. Maybe you can check out a hidden hitch, www.hiddenhitch.com for the bikes and get a kayak rack for the roof. Lastly, www.allenracks.com is another manufacturer.

Exclamation Stay away from Hiddenhitch!

I looked into getting a hidden hitch! But the dealer said it would void my engine warrenty! MP5 is not by any means, to have a hitch, or it would be an option! If you have seen MP5's with a hitch, there warrenty is probably expired!

Good Luck

My solution was a two-kayak rack adapter and a 'universal' bike rack that straps to the rear hatch...

I'd look into putting on a Yakima Load warrior or megawarrior. It'll mount to factory crossbars, gives you that ralley-safari basket kind of look, but fairly low-pro. and then has bars to mount yakima acessories on. Aside from that, nope no direct-mounts, you'd have to run Q towers and crossbars which is still about the most versatile rack system available. They prettymuch just mount over the top of the existing setup. I'm kind of relieved I managed to get an 03.5 without a rack so I didn't have to deal with this debate. I'd have likely went the Megawarrior route which might look kinda cheezy on such a sleek car.

I don't think you can fit two bikes and two kayaks on the roof.

You would need to put the two kayaks on the roof and two bikes on the back. You can get either a bike rack that hooks onto the hatch itself or a hitch mounted one.

PS The fact that a trailer hitch voids the warranty is the biggest pile of crap. F*$k'n dealerships!

I bought the Yakima Loadwarrior that attaches to the factory rack. I've got one set of Kayak saddles on, and one bike rack. That's all I can fit with my Kayak.

Depending on kayak or saddle size you might get two bike attachments and one saddle, or two saddles and one bike with the Loadwarrior.

Umm, nope if you get a kayak stacker, even on a standard width 48" bar, it's not a problem at all, alot of my friends travel places likethat. It's amazing what oyu can squeeze onto the roof of a car if you're determined enough. The best way for doing that is to put the yak stacker on one side, and the 2 bikeracks in opposite directions on the other... THe other option if you're realyl worried about room, is to just run 58" xbars. or do what I did, Got the longer ones, and hacked off 6" so I've got 52's just long enough to fit a spare bikerack ont he outside of my towers, and still nto stickout all goofy-like.

eric> hey you have any pics of your car? I've been curious to see what that'd look like. Also they make the Mega Warrior that I believe is about 8" wider. think that'd be enough to mount a 2nd bike?

No pics yet. Need to buy a new digital camera since it went with the ex in the divorce. It looks pretty cool. As with any rack it's pretty noisy with the sunroof open so I just take it off when not in use. You also can't use the tilt feature of the sunroof when the rack is on. I don't think the Mega warrior would fit. It's too big. You could get more on with kayak stackers but I think with two kayaks and bikes you'd exceed the weight limit. I think the Load warrior itself weighs 25 lbs (11 kg) and the basket content weight limit is 140 lbs (63 kg).
