i recieved my Mazda oil filters today from Mazdastuff. Ready to do my first oil change. I got Rhino ramps, maybe Mobil 1, undecided still, and now i need a filter wrench. I checked my tool box and i have five cap style wrenches. You know, they fit on the back of the filter like a cap and use a 3/8 drive ratchet. Well guess what, none fit . Five out of five and not one fits. The filter is very small and i'd like to use this type of wrench. Anyone know where i can pick one up and if so what is the upc or number. thanks Tom

 

You should be able to get your filter off with out that much effort. I have always used my hands when doing my oil changes. You never want to over tighten the filter when putting it on......forget the wrench. Probably will be difficult to get it up there or even seeing where to put it on the Protege's.

I did my first yesterday, and it was a royal biscuit. Of course the filter from the factory is on there super tight and it is in a position where I could not get my hand in position to apply the most torque, so I had to do the shadetree thing of inserting a screwdriver into the side of it to turn it.

 

I've only used my oil filter wrench to take OFF the filter. I only hand tighten it, and I suppose the pressure sucks it on just enough so I can't use my hand to get it off...or I am just that weak. There is no fitment problem whatsoever with the ratchet and oil filter wrench BTW.

 

I used a plier type filter wrench on mine, fit in there just fine. Cheapo walmart wrench too. I actually bought it a year ago for my friends MP5.

I'd just go to the store w/ filter and see what fits. There are also the adjustable cap ones, they work great. I know-spent 5 years in the pit at Jiffy Screw I mean Lube...

 

I posted this in another thread, but it might help you here: BTW, I found a universal oil filter tool that will fit almost any filter for the P5 - manufactered by Lisle, and about $10 at auto parts stores. Uses a 3/8" drive ratchet.

The tool uses a cam device to grip almost any small size filter, so it will work with any brand. The problem with cap wrenches is that they must match the brand of filter exactly, and the number of facets vary from brand to brand, in addition to the diameter varying.

Anyone use the Fram "Sure Drain" ? It sounds like a great idea, since unscrewing/screwing the drain plug will wear the threads over time.

***EDIT*** Nevermind, according to the Fram website, there isnt a part# available for it, so i guess they dont make one for us

***EDIT AGAIN*** The only year I found listed is the 2000. Would this work on a 2002 and up?

You can buy the cap style wrenches at:

You should buy the A255 cap style wrench for the newer oil filter sizes (ie part #: B6Y1 14 302 9A) or you can buy the A256 cap style for the older oil filter sizes (ie part #: B6Y2 14 302).

here's what i did..

went to canadian tire, looked up what oil filter goes in my p5. Found it on the shelf and walked uver to the filter wrenches and sized them until i found the one i needed. Than i put the oil filter back on the shelf and bought the filter wrench.
