Now before someone jumps on here with "do a search", i have and have not found the info i am looking for.

I am purchasing a set of used mp3 rims off another member. he said that he was running 205/40's on them and there was no problem. i have read that 215/40 will give you a more accurate odo/speedo reading....but heres the problem:

tirerack.com has Kumho supra 712 205/40-17 for $56 shipped! thats a good deal to not pass up...but i had also read that someone who was running these in the 205/40 size said they were crap on water, but a guy running 215/40's said they were awesome....
the price for the 712's in a 215/40 is $83 a piece, still a good deal, but thats an extra 120 for the set...120 is a lot of money for me these days....but i have also heard good things about the yokohama avs es100 which they also have good prices on......what tires are the best bet?
i'm not going to be autocrossing these, strictly for street use.
i dont want to spend more than 100-150 a tire....

my stockers are just about dead, with 37,000 miles on em....

Like guitargod said 215\40-17's would be the best size for speedo accuracy.

As for rain I have the Khumo's 205\45-17's and I think they're great in rain. From the tire reviews I have read the Yokohama's are a little better overall but then they cost a little more as well.

You can't go wrong with either one for my opinion. Find the best deal for the size.

so is the difference in readings worth a $30 a tire jump? how big of a difference would it be, and which way, would it show me going faster than i really am, or slower, cause whenever i drive past those radar signs (the ones that show your speed) it always says i am going approx 2mph slower than my speedometer says anyway...

You are probably not going to notice much difference in handling between the Khumo's or Yoko's.

well i just found another tool like that miata one, only it estimates mph and odometer readings based on the size tire vs. stock

its saying that with the 205/40 i will be recording an extra 9% of miles, so at 100000 miles, i'll show 100900 or something......hmm....kinda changes things...

maybe i should do 215/45...thats a -3.82% difference means that when i hit 100000 i will only show 96000

 

Personally...I would go with the YOKO's...the ES 100's....if you look at the performance data they are higher rated.....whether or not you will notice is most like a subjective thing. I have them...and absolutely love them...and I am running the 215/40's.


the speedo error is said to be such that the speedo shows 60.2 MPH for ever 60 mph you are actually doing.....which is a .4% error...that is pretty darn close.
