The exterior looks messy because some of the curves look very out of place. I know this is opinion, but way too many "character" lines.

The new Rolls Royce Phantom is a nice car though as it has the lines where they should belong. Given we are talking about different types of cars here, it still give's no reason for BMW to put too much "detail" into the exterior. The new E class is another good example of understated elegance and sportiness.

Some may think the interior looks furistic and art-deco but I think it, in contrast to the exterior is too bland. The i-drive system is was intended to replace the myriad and complexity of buttons on the old BMWs, but I think that i-drive is more a complication than a simplication, that is the public opinion for the 7 series i-drive. This 5 series one is a revised version, so it may work better.

There are too manny creases in the interior, it looks aggresive to some, or elegant, but I think that it looks like crap. Not as crap as the Z4's interior though.

I like the car, because it's a BMW, but given the choice, if I was 40 something now, I would choose the E class.
