Blaupunkt RPD 552...

Does anyone know if these head units are any good? It isn't the brand/model I would have chosen myself, but it came in the car when I bought it. I figured at least I got a CD player...but it seems to skip a lot and the buttons feel *cheesy*.

If they are a good unit, maybe it just needs a clean. I used to have a Pioneer in my Nissan and I have a JVC in my wife's minivan. Both were very solid and I could fly over railway tracks and speedbumps without a hiccup, but this one seems to skip on slightly bumpy country roads. Very annoying...

Any feedback on this model or Blaupunkt in general would be appreciated.

It is an older model,about 2001. Like most Blau's it has 22 watts rms. It's only worth $70 new so fixing it is not worth it. I've had 4 Blau's and love their sound- very clear and clean.

I own the Blau Austin CD41 and as protosaab mentioned, it sounds very clean and clear. Not too much artifical DSP stuff being added to the music.

On the down side, yes, it's a bit sensitive to road bumps.

I like the Blaupunkt line for what it is. The skyline series offers some outstanding features at some really low prices. In the past some of the hardware was famous for DOA. I can't say how the more recent stuff is in that regard. I like the Blau components for Proteges because one can get a skyline and the five changer indash unit to deal with the double din issue in a cool way.
The upside of Blau CD unit are the amazing specifications they maintain for Signal to noise, seperation, and frequency response, but the down side I am afraid you have found also, they are tripped up very easily by the smallest road surface. This can be helped a little by making sure that the headunit is secured by a backstrap also. Lots of installers simply don't mess with a back strap, if it the Protege was a single DIN situation, it might not matter. There is a nice, big, metal body tube in the dash right behind the radio that can be used to wrap a backstrap around, and the whole area can be gotten at by removing the entire glove box.
This won't fix the problem entirely, but will reduce it some.
