Question Fuel Light

Hey again, folks!

This is just another point of curiosity on my part: Anyone else notice that your fuel light comes on a bit earlier than on other cars? Mine always comes on about 3 or 4 millimeters (sorry, millimetres! ) before reaching the "E". On every other car I've ever seen, the light never comes on before the gauge is a bit *below* the "E". What's up with that!?

me 2

I also noticed the light isn't useful either. I have had other cars where you could put about 30-40 Kms (20-30 miles) before needing fuel, but the light comes on and I barely get 20 kms before having to refuel. I had my fuel pump replaced at 40000 kms and thought maybe something got screwed up with the sender. Seeing as others are having the same problem I guess it's just a design issue!

I have found the fuel light to be quite accurate, although I admit it comes on a little early. Every time it has come on, I have had room for 47L meaning that there were 8L left in the tank (since it's a 55L tank). I've been averaging about 10L/100Km, so that means that once the light goes on, I have approximately 80Km left. Seems reasonable.

For those of you who aren't familiar with the inner working of the fuel gauge (and maybe wonder why it stays above full for quite a while), I would recommend reading the fuel gauge summary on "How Stuff Works":

http://www.howstuffworks.com/fuel-gauge.htm

Cheers,

Eric

P.S. I have a manual MP5.

yep long time

Yep, my fuel light comes on with a little more than 2 gallons left. I can make it to work and almost all the way back home. About 80 miles. It's all highway driving though. (literally, I go through 2 stoplights) Maybe you're gauge is screwed up b/c you're stoping and going. just my $.02

80KMS highway when "E" light is on

50 Kms in the city. Tried time after time.

When the light goes on, I have 80kms/50kms (hwy/city) to drive until it REALLY needs some 87.

55L tank on 01 ES

I think in the manual it says that the light comes on as a 1/8 of a tank left indicator, I kinda like it because it actually gives you time to think before you are completely out.

Mine is very consistant, coming on with about 1/8 of a tank left.

ProtegeMaster,
What's the point of having it come on when you get to E or below? Wouldn't you rrather have a bit of time to get gas insead of...

brbrbrrbrbrbbr.. *light comes on"... car stops.
