Talking Northern Lights (Aurora Borealis)

Here are some pics of the northern lights, from Alaska. Beware 56kers.

I wish I got to see northern lights that look like these pictures. I saw bright red 1 time and it was amazing. Other than that all I see is green which isn't very impressive since I have seen green so many times. And the green ones usually don't dance around or anything like the more intense ones do.

I live outside the city, so I can see them on occasion. (Only about every time the moon is blue.) My Dad grew up in Yellowkinfe, NWT so he's used to seeing them. They really are something. Very majical.

How exactly are they caused again? Isn't it solar radiation and the atmosphere or something?

I'm from fairbanks, and I've seen them so well at night. Last year they lit up the sky like something out of starwars...It was a HUGE portal, I've never seen them that good since..

I think the last I've heard is that they're caused by gases being burnt up in the earth's atmosphere...or whatever. WHO CARES
They're freakin' beautiful and If you haven't ever seen em your really missing out..it's amazing. Much much better than your typical run of the mill 4th of July fireworks show. They can't compare...
