RX-7 owner looking for some AWD first gen info
Nice site here, I'm a regular on the RX-7 sister site to this one and looking at first gen AWD Proteges for a daily.
I've checked out past topics and found out some of the positives and negatives of this car and found the weak tranny issue, comes with an open diff unlike the GTX japanese variant which also has that nice BPT engine and beefier tranny (correct if I miss something
).
What I'm wondering is, what are any other quirks to this car such as wiper switches failing, basically any faults the car has.
Also I'm wondering what parts can be brought over from the Rx-7 to the AWD Protege. A turbo RX-7 diff would be an easy LSD for the rear if it works, but might be a bit overkill.
Anyways, I have a lead on a 5 speed AWD Protege with 8x,xxx miles, cant say details though, you understand
. Anyways, hopefully I'll have a car to test some things like that out on soon!
Edit - B "P" T engine
Thanks,
Geoff

Thanks for the info! I wont worry about the conversion much yet as I have yet to get the car
.
I think I will get this car even if there are problems with it providing nothing huge. If I dont decide to keep it I'm sure somebody on here would like to buy an AWD protege with under 100k

Finally!! i have been trying to find this 4wd pro info site:
www.protege4wd.vista.com
this is Frank's site - known as 'GotBoost' on the forum
EDIT: just found that this in the FAQ
oh well...maybe it'll be ezier to find posted in a thread in the future.
also, you asked about reliability....on the 1st gen you don't have much to worry about. you may find that the parking brake will not release - evidently because of a design flaw of the early 90's calipers. winter conditions worsen the possibility of this happening. anyway this happened to me (bty it did not affect ACTUAL braking...) and i replaced the calipers with some from a rust-free wrecked 94.

All very good information, thanks everyone!
I found that the car was stolen for two weeks though and was recovered with only fender damage. It does look mint but im trying to find somebody that will run carfax on it for me to ease my mind.
Thanks again!
Geoff
