I posted earlier on protegetech that my friend has a 1994 honda civic EX with intake, header, exhaust and a hi-flow cat. Anyways, he thought that because he had a civic that he could beat anything. He even dared to tell me that he could beat any protege because he had VTEC. Even the new Mazdaspeed Protege when it comes out. Anyways, I hooked him up with a race against an MP3 with AEM intake, Mazdaspeed Header, removed cat, and custom piping going to his stock muffler. Well, they lined up Saturday night and ran. The MP3 won by 1 full car length. This made my friend mad so they went again..........This time the MP3 won by almost two car lengths. Just thought everyone would like to know that Protege's kick *** and 1 Honda owner has now learned his lesson.

 

do the 94 ex even have VTEC?...i odnt think so...i have beat many civics and i love doin it....espescially the all kitted up ones and no engine mods...i love my baby blue

Yeah, the 94 EX civics came with VTEC, 3 of my friends have the exact same car and they all talk about VTEC like it's the **** even though I had to explain to them what VTEC was when they first bought the cars!

yea, the ex's have the vtech but its only the sohc version, nothing like the civic si's dohc vtech. the little ricer's need to learn the diffrence. the ex's rev a little higher but i can hang with and even beat them. The SI's are a whole diffrent story. Even before my friend put a turbo on his 2000 SI I could'nt hang with him.

 

I'm not sure, but I thought the only Civics with V-Tec were the SI's.

 

only the Si's have DOHC VTEC (the only VTEC that's actually performance-enhancing)

the SOHC VTEC found in common EX's are more designed/tuned for fuel economy.....

 

The 1.6 sohc vtec is nice its even with my 1.8 dohc pro ..so the vtec gives it some hp .But its not a turbo like most honda owners think it is Jon 93 lx

 

I bet all Civic ricers don't even know what V-TEC does. I'm not an expert but I think there are four kinds. SOHC V-TEC, DOHC V-TEC, i-VTEC and and V-TEC-E.

 

ummm...I think part of what it stands for is variable valve timing. It's supposed to change the way it runs at different RPMs. It's like having 2 engines in one. Makes better gas mileage in the city and gives it more power on the highway.

 

VTEC is highly overstated. It manages to make my friend's Si sound highly annoying once revved beyond 5500 RPMs. The car growls very nicely up to that point. After that there's an explosion of a high-pitched wet-fart like sound. Bleh!

P.S. It does also give his 1.6 engine 160 hp which is impressive to say the least.

One thing I've always wondered about variable valve timing is that, if they can enhance performance in a narrow band - doesn't that mean the car could perform better if the altered timing were applied to a wider band?

Another way of thinking about this is that the car is being choked up to 5500 rpm... For fuel economy?
