The headrest posts slide into two plastic hols on top of the seats. One of the plastic holes should have a tab that you push inward. Push it in and hold it while pulling the head rest up and out.

no not the headrest. being that i have a 2nd gen, the head rests are built in. what i am talking about is the entire backrest of the backseat (there are to parts two the backseat: where you sit, and then the backrest). does anyone know how to remove the ENTIRE backrest. man i feel redundant.

Ok, I almost did this once, and this is a very long a some what difficult process. First, open the truck. Then get inside the car, behind the seat you will see four plastic screws. You cannot see that they are screws from inside the car, that is why you need to look in the truck to see where they are. Also, take off the third brake light housing. You will need to undo the two snaps inside the trunk also, and then it should be loose. Don't pull it too hard, because you need to unplug the light bulb in there, and there is very little space to do so. Once you got the four plastic screws out (and it is not going to be easy, because I almost ripped them out - they are tough to come out), you should be able to take the rear panel off (the one that covers the speakers). Then you will be able to see where the rear strut upper mountings are, but besides the point. There are I believe two or three screws that need to come undone on the top of the seat, and also on the bottom. To get to the bottom once, you need to do it from the trunk. Once all the screw are loose, you should just lift the whole backrest, and pull it towards you.
I hope this helps a little, as I have said, I almost took it off, and only needed to get the screws on the bottom of the seat to come undone. But it was unnecessary for me, I was only trying to install a rear strut bar, and figured that it impossible of doing. Any how, good luck, I hope you get take it off.

I believe what he is asking is how to remove the part of the back passenger seats that is between the passenger and the trunk space. the entire thing not just head rests or anything like that. I have never removed mine but intend on it eventually so i can modifie it to be able to pull it down and get into the trunk from the inside of the car.

Yeah I figured that out after I posted, so I had to edit it. I hope it helps him.
