good universal exhausts?

hey guys, I'm new to exhaust systems so I was hoping you could help me out.

I want to get a muffler and get the cat-back piping done at a shop.
here is the question, what mufflers sound really good but not loud? I want a deep sound, Something that won't resonate inside the car at highway speeds but will give me good performance. Also I don't want it sounding raspy at all. Something that won't be too much louder than my intake at WOT.
I don't like huge tips, somewhere around 3-31/2 inch tip. 4 inch is pushing it. pretty much something that will fit the cut out on the p5 bumper and not look to big.

Thanks

Sorry if it is confusing to read.

Once a custom cat back exhaust is broken it, it will be annoyingly loud unless the muffler is

a) as wide as the stock muffler

b) as long as the stock muffler..

if any of those 2 dimensions become smaller the sound gets louder..

your best bet would be a fairly stock looking exhaust, all in stainless steel, with a nice tip.

you won't gain very much power wise from any exhaust for the compromise in noise. I have had 2 exhaust systems until I settled on the Bosal, which is still quite loud.

Since there will be almost no power gain, unless you have a hookup at a shop and are getting a good price, you might as well just go for a custom rear axle-back exhaust which can be changed to stock if you want to keep the noise levels low.. or a muffler with a silencer option
