Question Anybody care?

I've had to respond to two posts about racial slurs used. I'm sure they weren't used to put down anybody, but that still doesnt excuse the fact that they are words with a natural negative connotation. It's reference to the racial slur "jap," and how people seemingly use it like any other word. Just like most people have learned not to use other racially negative words, I think the same can be said about this one. So, I hope I'm not alone in feeling this way. I mean, books have been written about this subject for crying out loud. Just would like to see a more open forum that was maybe less ignorant to sensitive facts like this. I'm sorry that this is off topic, but I feel like it's an important issue to address. Again I appologize for the length, and once again I'm sure others agree.

yea man dont worry about it, i was raised in Japan, so it would really bother me. But i figure if your not directing it towards a person and your just talking ie jap. books, jap. cars, its not really a "slur" its just easier even for really fast typers to type jap and not japenese (took me 3 tries to spell that out write).

My grandfather uses the word Jap(s) to refer to people. Then again, it's usually when he's telling stories about fighting in WW2. Obviously he has some bias due to the uprovoked attack at Pearl Harbor. Still, it makes me uncomfortable to hear it. Even if you're talking about Japanese cars, calling them "Jap cars" is the equivalent of saying "cars built by Japs"

calling them "Jap cars" is the equivalent of saying "cars built by Japs" Yeah it could be, or it could be the equivelant of saying "cars built by Japanese."

Allright everybody like i suggested on the other post (spark plug) from now on everyone start putting periods at the end of every abbreviation you make so no one can take offense to it. ie: Jap. maybe that'll calm everyone down. What the hell is wrong with people? You can't say a goddamn (sorry if i offend anyone) thing anymore without someone taking offense to it. What pisses me off is no one was using it as a slur, but as an abbreviation. No one better not abbreviate states someone will be offended. I'm not trying to be a jerkoff if they meant it as a racial slur then okay there is a right to be upset, but for god sakes stop looking so deeply into things.

Racial slurs don't have to be intended as insults to be inappropriate. I'm not trying to interpret anyone's intentions here, but it wouldn't hurt for people to avoid saying things that could easily be misinterpreted. If you don't mind coming off as a jerk (as I probably do sometimes) then don't worry about it.

I do think some people are too sensitive and take political correctness to the extreme. But some words/references have negative connotations attached to them, so I understand why alternatives have been encouraged.

I already understand the fact of how the word was used, but that still doesnt excuse the fact that "Jap" is a racial slur no matter how it's said or put. I'm serious, there have been books written about this subject, which describes the use of certain words and how it affects others through pure ignorance. Even stationed Marines in Japan are advised by their supperiors not to use "Jap." In fact, I met a marine who said he'd kick anybody's *** if he hears some ignorant fool say it(stationed in Japan). This has nothing to do with not having a "tough skin." And realize that even saying "Jap" to shorten Japanese is still perpetuating ignorant racial and ethnic slurs. Face the facts, "Jap" is an unacceptable word to use in any form. End of discussion.
