Protege Vs Mazda3

First off I gotta say, I love the Mazda3. I hate the stock grill's (All of them) but the aftemarket replacements fix that up right away. Both the Sedan & Hatch have beutifull qualities.

The 2.3L Engine is great.

Owning a Protege, I wanna be able to keep up with them, stock the Mazda3 runs arround 16.4 STOCK in the 1/4 (Taken from R&T), and with intake/exhaust they do high 15's.

This is the source for Stock 1/4 mile times
http://www.albeedigital.com/supercou...0-60times.html

Well Ive been working twords a high 15 second time, and if all goes well I should hopefully have it next week.

I had a night at the track, but It wasnt the best night to be there. It was arround 50 F outside, and right after I arrived it started drizzling, they kept the races going because it was light and on/off, but they had to halt races for 45min at one point because the track was just too wet, the drizzle stopped and the races continued. It was really shitty track conditions there was little to no hook up, I was spinning hard grabbing second, it was a joke.

Due to the circumstances The times I got werent too bad, my best was a 16.049 @ 87mph, second best was 16.08X @ 87mph.

That is Just a tad faster then a Stock Mazda3 2.3L 1/4 mile time.

Since then Ive been prepping the car for my next trip to the track.

When I got the 1/4 mile times The Oil was overdue for a change, and the tranny fluid has never been changed in the car yet, I also still had the spare + jack in the back.

Yesterday, I did a engine flush, + new oil with Lucas Oil Stabalizer added. I also removed the spare & Jack. Today or tomorow, Im going to change the tranny fluid and add Lucas Tranny Fluid Stabalizer. Then Tuesday I will be at the 1/4 mile hunting a sub 16 second time.

HOWEVER!!!

A Protege Vs Mazda3 Story

After changing the oil, I wanted to go have some fun with her, so I headed over to the 1/8 mile track (the 1/4 mile is open Tuesdays) for a couple races.

It was CRAZY packed, and in the wholenight I was only able toget 3 races in. First was a Protege5 5spd, second was a Mazda3 2.3L S-GT Hatch, and the final race was with another Mazda3 2.3L, but the Sedan with a Sport Shift Auto.

Protege5 5spd
Intake/complete exhaust line from custom shop.

I took him by about 4 car lenths, We both were expecting it we were just racingfor fun, but if I f-ed up at all he might of took it.

Mazda3 2.3 S-GT Hatch 5spd
BONE Stock

This had to be one of my most favorot races to date, we were side by side the whole track, and I started to inch ahead at the mid/top of 2nd, and through third, we ran after the line for a bit, & I kept inching ahead. I didnt beat him off the line, I over powered him. It felt great to inch ahead of him, I crossed the line with about 3 feet on him and we kept running for at least another 200feet at witch I had about 1 car lenth before He let off then I let off and got on the brakes hard. This win felt great. I beat 3 Mazda3 5spd's last year in the 8th, but in all those races Iout drove the guy mudering them off the line, this race he got off the line side by side with me and I didnt start to pull on him untill mid 2nd gear.

Mazda3 2.3L 4 door Sport Shift Auto
Intake & Exhaust line

Keep in mind on top of it he had 3 amps and a chunk of speakers lights and this that and the other in it, I pulled up next to check out his 3 & we started chatting then raced for fun. I told him, I have beat a few Mazda3 2.3L 5spd's already, but we go anyways as its just for fun.

What we both expected to happen did, I dogged him off the line, and built about 6 or 7 car lenths on him (At least) when we hit the line. He was really suprised how fast I got out the hole.

Ended up chatting after with him and checking out his buddies H23 (Thats Right H23, not a H22) Accord, with a R34 front end conversion (Very well done, they used a actual R-34 bumper and fit the accord angel eyes to it.) & a CF hood & ground splitters that flow nice. The Crap is fricken powerfull over 200whp out the box motor. (J-spec engine of course)

In the end it was a fun night, and the 2nd Win felt great.

Wish me luck next week going sub 16.

Mazda3's are known to be a little slower than you'd expect in the low end, but they gain it all back in the top end from what I hear. I drive a 2.3L hatch 5spd but i don't race it so i can't tell you first hand, but I'd say watch out toward the end of the 1/4, he might pull a bit.

Your absolutly right. They are a little slow down low but make up for it up top.

I kinda got the same issue untill I get a UDP, you see I opted for 4-1 headers, they are great up high, but a little robbing down low, the UDP ballences it out.

Im pretty sure If I didnt have the header put in, I wouldnt of had the Top end to pull on him, It wasnt untill 3rd gear that I got a good lead. 3rd gear took me from a few feet ahead to a car lenth, but the line came right after grabbing 3rd gear in the 8th, we just pulled it for another 200feet. Usually in the 1/4 I finish 3rd, and grab 4th before crossing the line, I get a trap speed of 87mph.

My best time is about .2 to .4 faster then stock Mazda3 2.3L 5spd's, but on a track at the speeds we are going (Sub 100mph) thats a VERY small distance, Like 1 to 2 car lenths.

Suprisingly enough, I was pulling on him more at the top end, then at the bottom.

Interesting, Another thing Is weight, I don't know if your New rims are lighter than stock assembly, but Proteges are already about ~200lbs lighter than a stock 3s.
For instance the Hatch weighs a tad over 2850lbs where as the protege sedan is about 2650lbs.

So right there you have a big advantage, but from your videos you look like a good driver, which is the most important part in anyrace!

I'm not exacly sure what a UDP is, i've never heard that term... enlighten me?

Thanks, I feel I got a good launch and a quick shift (Will be quicker with a short throw shifter, thats Im putting in in a few weeks ) I have to say a few races I should of lost, but I out drove the competition.

A UDP is a Under Drive Pulley, it gives you some extra grunt down low, Im sure you know what it is.

As for Tires, My rims are light BUT they are 17's & have expensive *** tires (Pirelli P-Zero RoSA) So I put on my 15" Stock steelies back on the front and drop the tire pressure when at the track. Last time I had it at 17PSI, next week, Im dropping it to 15PSI.

I hit tha track last night for some fun, I kep my tire pressure at 38PSI & had My buds extra weight in the car. The first race I had a horrible launch, the guy whowent before me dripped some **** on the track annd my tire hit it when I did a burn out, I spun the tires a bit after but I had terrible grip. Not enough to lose the race, but enough to give him a
shine of hope.
