MX-6 vs. Protege DX
My best friend finally moved back to Tampa from Illinois, and he's been talking crap about his old ass '91 MX-6....let get you guys opinion...I did some research and here's what I found..his stock 2.2 ohv rates at 110 hp his car weighs in at 3700+lbs..its got 150,000 miles on it and he's bone stock....My 1.6L DOHC rates at 105hp and I weigh in at 3400 lbs...ive got 34,000 miles on mine and I did run my CAI which definitely makes an improvement but I dont know how much..both 5 speeds..I think I can whoop his ass....what do you guys think??

I beleive you have an excellent chance.....with the power to weight ratio very close like it is....its going to boil down to things like
the launch/reaction time traction/tires profeciency at shifting so go for it...and HOUND HIS ASS when you beat him. :{D |
Hmmm... Your numbers are a bit off...
1991 Mazda MX-6 DX 2.2L SOHC I-4 110 hp 130 ft-lbs 2,560 lbs 2000 Mazda Protege DX 1.6L DOHC I-4 105 hp 106 ft-lbs 2,434 lbs Are you sure his is just a base model? There's also the turbo with 35 extra hp and 60 extra ft-lbs. However, if it is a base model, you may stand a chance, but I would give the nod to the MX-6 just from sheer numbers. If his is a turbo... well, then you wouldn't stand a chance. -Jerry |
dont know where you got your weight numbers....we looked at the GWVR inside the doors and his read 3765 lbs and mine read 3425lbs..so I'll believe our actual cars vs your book or website..also I know about the MX-6 and I've been under the hood of his car helping him fix it...It's an LX as in NO TURBO..the GT was the only model with turbo...also I posted mileage for a reason...anyone who knows about cars knows that high mileage engines do not maintain their original compression, and lose some horsepower...so I think he's only got me in one dept:torque, and I suspect with 150,000 miles, and an oil leak,he doesnt have me by much...plus his clutch is slipping ;)
|
Well hell... if his clutch is slippin, you'd beat him even if he was running turbo. :D

And here are the Turbo specs Engine: 2.2 Liter Horsepower: 145 Torque: 190 ft-lbs Fuel Economy: 21/28 mpg Bore x Stoke: 3.39 x 3.7 Compression Ratio: 7.8 Curb Weight: 2,705 lbs 0 - 60 mph: 7.2 sec. |
And check out how low the compression ratio is on the stock mx6. Can sombody say turbo upgrade.
|
really wasnt my point about the weight, but im still lighter, newer, and most definitely a better clutch considering my tranny got replaced 5,000 miles ago...not to mention I already nipped the turbo part in the bud,I've been under the hood of this car and there is no turbo...not to mention the LX MX-6 had NO TURBO...c'mon guys give me a brake here,I want an honest opinion, not to get flamed...I'll race him anyway and let you disbelievers know..

c'mon guys give me a brake here,I want an honest opinion, not to get flamed...I'll race him anyway and let you disbelievers know.. Where are you guys going to race... how far, how fast? Better choose a long race to overcome his low-end torque and take advantage of your engine's better high-end. -Jerry |

Jesus, I'm rooting for the guy in the MX6 even though I don't know either of you, just cause you sound like a dumbass
|
I honestly think it will be a close race, but the mx6 might pull ahead. Its a toss up, with all the problems you say he has, you should beat em.
|
MX6 all the way
It's 1 year I have my P5. Before I had a 91 MX6 LX. I loved the 12 valve engine on the MX6....It just I had a lot of low-end torque...
The mx6 will beat the other one.... |
i'd say its too close to call.....now if he had a 93-97 MX6 LS with a 2.5 V6 then you would be in big trouble!
