modded celica gt-s and civic ex vs stock 03 pro dx

When I was driving through baltimore, I noticed an irritating buzzing noise that gradually grew louder. I kept turning my radio up until I realized it was coming from a coffee canned celica with a ugly bodykit (looks good stock, why change it?) with go-fast stickers that was riding up behind me. :barf:
During an open stretch, the driver downshifted and unleashed his mighty bees. I downshifted and took off after him and easily kept up with his ricer ass. He then backed off and dissappeared.
I was telling this to my buddy who owns a civic ex with an intake and more tastefully subdued coffee can. He didn't believe that a "piece of shit" stock protege could keep, so naturally I challenged him to a duel.
We did two stoplight drags and two rolling highway races and I whooped his ass every time.
I know that our proteges are dynoed with much lower horsepower to the wheels while toyotas and hondas puts power to the wheels much more efficiently.
Other than the proteges gearing I don't know how to explain it. Thoughts?

it's called torque....enjoy it.

armyguy November-30th-2004 09:07 AM

It's not like the protege is putting out torque like a TDI. Does a couple pound feet of torque really make that much of a difference?

Roddimus Prime November-30th-2004 09:11 AM

torque+gearing=you win over the celica

i know my almost stock p5 makes a buttload more torque than an Integra TypeR....

Matty Mooling November-30th-2004 09:27 AM

that's one thing that i loved and miss about my protege... all that torque

Stueck November-30th-2004 11:47 AM

torque = gooooooood! i love it, when im driving the 04 matrix (toyota) it has no oomph, no "feel the torque curve kick in", just a steady rise in RPMs. wheras the protege, when you kick it, it kicks you right back!

....and, how come we don't give this guy a hard time for racing on public roads like the others before him?

Roddimus Prime November-30th-2004 02:03 PM

because his didn't say "I was doing 80mph on a public road in the daytime when traffic was around"....things like that.

p.s. If you look around there is a thread or two where I've verified the p5 will go over 130mph.....i just didn't mention when or how this was done!

...yeah, I was meaning to ask you about that. Officially, mine only does 70mph, which coincidentally is the legal limit. But it might, just might, have a lot more grunt at 100mph than it used to now that it has that killer Wagner header under the hood... in fact, it might be able to hit that speed coming onto I-696, before running out of off-ramp, gloriously roaring through the AEM intake. That kind of launch might just spice up my morning commute on a rare morning, maybe even be the highlight of the day. Yeah, it might. But I will never know that for sure, will I?

Roddimus Prime November-30th-2004 02:27 PM

not unless you take it to the track!!

So, what's this about you going to mid-Ohio next summer?

Roddimus Prime November-30th-2004 03:51 PM

summer nothing...as soon as it thaws !!

armyguy November-30th-2004 04:51 PM

The race with the celica was during an open stretch with nobody around. I raced my buddy's civic after getting off shift after midnight, also nobody around...
I make sure of this, so don't worry your life isn't in danger.
