What year Grand Am? Because the ones I am thinking of are much quicker than Proteges... especially SOHC engines.

Good kills. But if you read further back in the Racing Stories section, ppl have posted about getting whipped by the new Grand-Am.

For some reason I keep having punks in Cav's wanting to race.
After I win the never stop to hear me laugh.

The new Grand Ams, 99 + up I believe, all come with the V6s. I had a '97 Grand Am GT and it was equipped with the 2.4l 4cyl engine. I think it would be possible to win against the 2.4ls, especially if there is a weight advantage. I can't remember how much mine weighed.

They've actually downgraded the base Grand Am engine to their "ecotec" 2.2 litre 4cyl... only 140 hp. But you can get it with a 5-speed. You can't get a manual with the 6.

The 6-cylinder models are pretty quick, even with auto. (170 hp, or 175 hp with ram air on GT).

The 99+ Grandams did come with that horrible quad four in them. In 99 you couldn't get them with a 5sp in any models but they brought them back for 2000, in the 4 cyl model only. Imagine if they had a 5sp available in the V-6 model.
That ecotec motor in them now, as far as I know is just a more powerful version of the pushrod 2.2 that was in the Cavalier/sunfire.
Yeah the v-6 grandam GT's 99+ were fast as ****. I drove the boss's wifes once a while back and I remember flooring it doing about 30kmh and it took right off. There was a hell of alot of torque steer too.

OH lord...2.2, 2.4...hahah I forget.

We were looking at brand new Grand Ams in 99 before we bought the 97. The dealerships said they only had v-6s with auto trannys . Oh well, we bought the 97 because it was a shifter and it was waaaaaaaay cheaper than new and only had 13k on the ticker.

It was a automatic and that thing burned the tires with no hassle .And i have no doubt in my mind that a cavalier will smoke a protege. Even my 93 lx protege ...Jon

The base Cavaliers are the slowest cars known to mankind. 115 hp does not go very far, ESPECIALLY with the base 3-speed automatic.

I raced my friend when he was driving one, and it made me feel sorry for anyone who -oops- accidentally bought one. I say that because I know nobody in their right mind would buy one on purpose. Let me just say, it wasn't even CLOSE. You don't measure the difference in car-lengths... Maybe football fields.

Maybe your 93 LX just sucks donkey *****.

FWIW, our old vastly-underpowered '93 Villager will light up the tires under moderate throttle, when accelerating around a curve.

Not a great indication of power. Only a great indication of lack of traction.
