where'd u get the grill kit from

hey! where'd u get that grill kit from. i got a 2000 protege and i wanna change my grill.

Jonnyman September-10th-2002 11:15 AM

Hey!

It's custom made from premium rain (gutter) guard.

I bought mine from Canadian tire and it came in a package of 5 for $14 CDN. I think you guys have a place called Lowes in the states which has the same stuff ...you can also try Home Depot but I'm not sure if the quality is as good.

If you want the 2001/2002 front emblem just go to your local dealer and ask them to order one for you. I paid $11 CDN for mine.

I used the outter jacket from black coaxial cable to go around the upper grille so that it looks complete and doesn't scratch the paint.

I have heard the easiest way to install the grille is to take the front bumper off but I did mine the hard way and didnt'. :)

Good luck,

Jon

Hey Jonny,

Just registered today, and saw your post.

Great job on the mods, especially the diamond clear corners, and the custom upper and lower mesh grills. Where did you get the clear corners, and how difficult were they to install.

I too have 2000 Pro LX Sedan. I live in Oakville and work in St.Catharines, so maybe we could hook-up to chat. I have done some mods to my Silver Pro (see below).

thanks for the info. i bought a grill sheet from the store a couple months ago and put it on the bottom grill. i took off the whole bumper to do it. it took a while to take it off and it's hard to get those plastic screws off but after that it's a whole lot easier. how'd u get the top grill off without taking off the bumper?

Jonnyman September-12th-2002 03:41 PM

Hey guys!

Big Oz glad you joined the board!

I got the diamond clear corners from www.procarparts.com but I got stung for brokerage/gst/pst at customs. Ended up paying about $160 CDN after all was said and done (they were $50USD). I can install the clear corners in about 4-5 mins ..really easy ..just have to open the hood, remove the screw that is attaching the turn signal to the frame then pull the corner lense out ..disconnect the wire harness and plug it into the new one. I painted (more like dusted) the orange bulbs with high heat silver paint so they don't shine orange when the lights are not on. They still shine orange when they are turned on though.

Were in St. Catharines do you work? I live in St. Catharines but work in Thorold.

Thanks for the compliments.

ryankk49 ...the upper grille was very hard to remove without taking the bumper off ..basically one guy pulls the bumper forward and the other guy unscrews and pops out the tabs.

Very nice, I like the grill a lot. Black cars look great, I wish I had a black pro instead of white.

Jonnyman September-12th-2002 09:58 PM

Hey thanks!

Black cars look good until it rains ...then it's back to washing again :) Not to mention how every scratch and swirl mark shows up in the light ... I have way too many stone chips on my hood. My white grand prix was better at hiding scratches.

was the grille a custom job?

Big Oz September-16th-2002 08:19 AM

Jonny,

Sorry I didn't reply back to your message until today...I've been away a few days.

Anyways, I work at MTO in downtown St. Kitts. Thorold is just a hop and a skip from downtown. Hey, maybe we could hook-up at lunch one day to check out each others rides.

Jonnyman September-16th-2002 10:34 AM

Billy: Yep the grille is custom made by me ...see above.

Big Oz: That would be cool ..I'd like to see your ride ...do you have cruise control?

I saw the guy from the Niagara Region with the black 2000 protege lx w/touring edition, apc euro tails, white rims and aluminum wing yesterday ....it was a nice ride.

does putting on the gutter gaurd scratch the paint onb the bumper around the edges? I think it looks good. I have the regular clear corners on a silver 2000 LX. I wish I had the Diamond clears, but they cost way to much

Jonnyman September-16th-2002 12:56 PM

It doesn't scratch the paint at all because on the upper grille I put the outter jacket of a black coax (cable tv) cable around the edges.

For the lower grille it doesn't matter because it sits in behind the bumper.

Just use very small zip ties to secure the upper mesh to the original grille then paint the zip tie silver to match the silver/aluminum grille. Paint the small zip ties black where it goes over top of the coax cable jacket. Touch up paint works fine for it.

Yeah the diamond clears were expensive after shipping and duty.

I want to get side skirts and front and rear lip but it's too expensive right now. Znole made his himself and it looks mint in his pictures.

White face guages would be nice but I'm not really into breaking the needles. :) Also since I'm from Canada it's more convenient to have the KPH as the larger number rather than MPH.

Hey Jon!

Nice looking pro! Its similiar to mine, I've got the '99 Touring edition, Black Mica as well.

You've done several mods i've been waiting to do (no $$), which is the diamond clear corners, and the carbon tail lights for sure. I've just never wanted to order them from the states as well, because I know how we get rapped with the echange/custom fees and all that jazz.

Thanks for posting that canadian website that sells the taillights, i'll check them out. How much did you pay for the tail lights?

Billy September-18th-2002 03:45 PM

where did you get the carbon fiber taillights?

Jonnyman September-18th-2002 07:15 PM

Bad news about the carbon tail lights guys ... they suck BIG TIME!!!!!!!!!! I actually sent those pieces of crap back to www.driverfx.ca. because of defective plastic. Several other people had the same problems in the exact same spots as me. I have since found a set of the 1st gen chrome APC's without the red strip on the side. Paid $285cdn no shipping. I actually really like these on there ..they match my headlights and the chrome badges at the back of the car. Some people think they are ricey but everyone I know that has seen them has said they look great.

If you aren't in to those I would say stay with stock.

Jonny
