What about the movie that got him into the biz in the first place - Strays?
As his first full length feature, he wrote, directed AND starred in it. Not a great movie, but spielberg saw it and hired Diesel for a role in Saving Pvt Ryan. It was only uphill from there!
And if you want to see a short film he basically did about himself before Strays, track down a DVD called Short 5 - Diversity. It's a collection of short films, one of which is called Multi-Facial. It's basically a biography of himself and how he struggled to find acting work in New York.
