All you computer and Windows gurus out there, I could use a little help. I have an older PC game that I want to run, but because now I have the NTFS with XP Pro, it won't run. I am assuming it needs the older FAT32 setup. Anyways, is there any kind of emulator or way to run my older game? thanks!

PS - It is definitely NOT a DOS game.

I think that Menace is talking about "compatability mode"

- find the shortcut to the program you are trying to run
- right click it
- select properties
- select the "compatability" tab
- check the "run this program in compatible mode"

now, try the different modes until you find one that maybe works... I usually try from the bottom of the list up... win2k, then NT.40, then Win98/ME, and lastly win95.

This might make the older program run, you may also need to try playing with some of the other settings on that tab until something works for ya.

You can use compatibility mode in Windows 2000 too. To my memory it was a post SP2 pre-SP3 release on Windows Update.

It's definitely not the NTFS, NTFS is GOOD! You only use Fat32 if you are worried about older systems (NT4.0 pre SP6a, Win9x) being able to see the data on the drive. It can be a beatch to recover data on a corrupt NTFS drive if you don't have another Win2k system running.

Yeah, I have the same deal with a few games. They do run in windows98 mode, but very crappy. Some are fine, and even better, but the only thing I can suggest is to get another hard drive, put FAT32 on it, and put all your games on it.

 

I do not see how having a FAT32 partition will make that any better... you are still dealing with an OS issue.

 

Oh, yeah, you are right. I have two HDs, one with NTFS and another FAT32. I forgot that in order for me to use the FAT32 one, I have to disconnect the NTFS one. Ok, new solution. Start with a clean hardrive, and intall FAT32 partition first (98SE, or ME). Then intall NTFS (XP). That will prompt you at boot-up whether you want to run FAT32 or NTFS partitions. If you install XP first, and then 98SE or ME, it would not work.

 

I originally considered that idea before I upgraded to XP Pro, but I decided to keep my 42GB HD and stick with NTFS, and if a problem arose I'd just deal with it, and so far it's working out for me
