Steer clear of Polk Street.

It really depends on what you like to do. SF is a huge city with, well, everything! China Town is pretty trippy, and the food is unreal. Also there's the world famous hippie heaven, Haight-Ashbury. Plenty of old music and weird people smoking herb. Wherever you go in San Francisco, you'll probably see some weirdos, but that's the fun! Weirdo Watching. It's a fun, beautiful city.

Go to Garridelli Square, I am sure I misspelled that but there is a chocolate factory there....

also Fishermans Warf...its just down the street....also Pier 39 for a nice shopping trip...its all right there together with the warf and the square.....

then there is the tour of Alcatraz....that is really cool too.

and you have GOT TO ride the cable cars.....

being your first time in the bay area...you will certainly have to take a ride on BART....which is the Bay Area Rapid Transit.....its sorta like a subway....take the run from sanfran over to oakland....it goes under the bay.....and at 80 MPH too.

rent a mazda miata and drive south on the coastal highway....monterey, santa cruz, 17 mile drive...go north to saucilito and the big redwood forest...in SF itself, try cliff house and the park (japanes tea garden, science museum, acquarium). you'll have a great time! (BTW not much room for luggage in a miata trunk.)

Pier 39, Girrardelli, Alcatraz, Golden Gate Park, Chinatown, lunch at the rotating restaurant on top of Hyatt, Coit Tower, then go over to the rich neighborhood around Geary Blvd, go to the beach right underneath the Golden Gate (beware sharks) , take a walk on the Golden Gate, then as already said, take the BART and zip over to Oaktown and pay me a visit (I am at Oakland right now), in Oakland, there's not much to do, but you can visit UC Berkeley, and then stroll through Oakland Hills. Then go to the Oakland Marina and see the marvelous view of San Francisco.

There's a lot to do in the Bay Area

You're name's messenjah. Do you listen to reggae? If so, you're headed to the right city. Check out Rasputin's, Streetlight, and Amoeba record stores. There's all kinds of music in San Francisico.

wow, calm down there ghinesley. when i was in cali back in sept. we went up to pier 39 for a day. did the bay cruise.. i've got a bunch of pictures from it. it was mad foggy out. had to pick up a new kangol hat while i was down there ;] and a new dickies coat. hit up ghirardelli while we were there too. expensive *** chocolate, but very good. went to monterey and hit up the aquarium (over-rated! hyped up, and wasnt that great). then, i met up with Rishie! If you're around his part of town, head over to his shop for some kick *** Mazda action. I didn't get a chance to see his shop, but I did get to see some of his cars, which are bad ***.

Thumbs up Castro

I've got a friend who lives down in the Castro District in SF, and despite many people's (dare I say, ill founded) objections to gay people, the Castro area is really a cool neighborhood that's totally worth visiting. Neither him nor I are gay, but issues of that matter are irrelevant down there. It's a vibrant, clean, well kept community. People are friendly and you certainly never need to be paranoid about getting hit on or bothered; a common misconception that has no basis in reality. There's always something going on and the music is cool. Honestly, anyone not understanding the culture of the area would be surprised how cool, artistic, and interesting a place the Castro is. I'm originally from the Bay Area (Oaktown in fact, KpaBap!), and in my opinion SF is a better city for the safe and accepting place harbored in the Castro District.
