Thumbs down RX-8 178whp

Wow! This sucks *****. The RX-8 is rated at 250hp and loses over 70hp on the dyno.

Wait one minute here.

There are 2 versions of the RX8 - a 207 HP automatic, and the 250 HP 6-speed.

Are you sure they were testing the 250 HP variant? And with a manual transmission? 70 horses is a LOT of driveline loss (28%), especially for a manual transmission car.

I think a typical automatic loses 20-25%, while a typical manual loses about 15%.

Someone will correct me if I'm wrong - but these dyno numbers just ain't adding up.

Hopefully Mazda doesn't have a miata like oops on there hands. (although that really didn't hurt the sale of miata's did it?) Mazda handled that correctly, hopefully it'll do the same here. 70hp shy? Jeesh. Actually it's more like 30 hp shy as it seems the RX8 people were expecting 200-210.

When it gets broken in right, I'm hoping to see 200-210 rwhp.

FWIW, the 350Z does the same thing...
here's another thread on rx8forum:

basically the Mazda R&D guy IMPLORED rotarynews.com to NOT dyno the car until after a few thousand miles.

hey Jesse, care to give a URL to how the 350Z dyno'd w/ a green engine, compared to a broken-in one?

You'd think after the miata, cobra, and recent Hyundai power issues, Mazda would have told everyone that this woudl be the case instead of having a bunch of brand new Rx8 owners getting all upset. These people are the cream of Mazda's owenership (moneywise anyway). If the Rx8 serves them well, mazda stands to build a lot of loyalists, ie, minivans, mazda6, and even 3's when it's time for a new family car. The Rx8 is more of a flagship for Mazda then the 6 is. If they have problems with the Rx8 Mazda stands to lose a lot.

Well, if they have something like that built into the ECU, they should have said something

But after 5k or 10k or whatever and getting a 20-30whp increase would be AWESOME!!!!!

there are 2 types of modes

regular where it maeks like 210 flywheel and sport where it makes 250

the auto can only do regular mode and its cheaper but lame

i bet it just doesnt go into sport mode until you break it in since its not the regular mode and probalby wears out the engine a bit more
