which project beater car should i get...

which project beater car do you guys think i should get and why:

'92 mazda MX3 GS
or
'92 honda civic si hatchback

UCSBgeek October-28th-2002 10:25 PM

mazda!!! what do you think i'd say on a mazda protege board ;)

5SpeedP5 October-28th-2002 10:34 PM

look for a early nighties SE-R or NX (nissan of course) you can get 'em cheap, they are strong as fuck, fun as hell..... and pretty darn fast too....

i went looking for a beater, and this is what i ended up with, a 93 se-r, and i got a really nice one at that.. not really a beater

Sir Nuke October-28th-2002 11:18 PM

if you are wanting to get a beater and then really fix it up nice...and IF you are wanting a FAST car on top of that...look into the aftermarket for all the go fast goodies for the different kinds of cars you would be considering and then get the car that has the support you would want to enable you to complete your project like you would want it.

Makaveli October-28th-2002 11:55 PM

how much can you get them for?

with the MX-3, you could swap in the 2.5L engine (I forgot the kode).... is it KL-ZE????

zoominD October-28th-2002 11:56 PM

I would probably go with the Si. I don't care too much for the earlier mx-3s. You have alot more aftermarket to choose from. I have a Pro5, my wife drives a 626 but I also have a '87 accord lx-i hb I play around with.

funkdaddysmack October-29th-2002 07:33 AM

Yea, I'm a bastard. If you're looking to go fast, get the civic. Yes, you can put a BPT or KL-ZE into an mx-3, but the civic has TOO much of an aftermarket to ignore. There are almost unlimited different combos of engines you can throw in that thing to go fast. And you can do them on the cheap. How about a turbocharged H22 making 400hp? No problem.

Now ppl, lets be honest to ourselves. Even though this is a Mazda forum, y'all got to know that he has a better chance of making a Civic fly than a MX-3. There is way to much aftermarket stuff for the Civic. If it was my choice on all speed, I'll go for a Civic easily, but if it was a project car for shows, I would get the MX-3.

Here, maybe this will give you an idea of what you want.http://www.imagestation.com/album/?i...ulation_page=Y go to the Video and download it.
BTW, that Civic is a '92.

funkdaddysmack October-29th-2002 01:49 PM

Yea, my friend has a '94 civic hatch with an integra type-r engine in it (yes, and actual type r engine), I think the engine code is like B18C or something, I don't know for sure. Anyways, I've yet to ride in it, but he says he has no problems beating most of the cars around here. He only lost to a mustang so far that had plenty of engine work done i've heard. Quick car for sure.

Besides being good-looking (IMO), this MX-3 IS FAST!!!

love his story...no sponsors and yet he challenged the best with a good ole BPT swap :D:

Debunking Myth # 8903: KLZE's won't meet emissions

This is simply not true. My ZE was EGR ready--I actually installed all the EGR equipment onto it, but left the exhaust tube off--if I were to just use a EGR equipped intake manifold. The Millenia ZE manifold has a fitting on the back of it for an EGR, or you could use the K8DE manifold, or a KLDE manifold from a MX-6 or PGT.

Also, from the MX-3 Mailing list just this week:

From: "Mark Lourenco" <mlourenco82@s...>

Subject: My KL-ZE passed Emissions

Seeing how so many people complain about failing emissions tests, I
thought I'd share my setup:
- KL-ZE
- Mx-6 North American Intake Manifold
- KL-02 VAF (MX-6)
- K-08 ECU
- 94 octane
- 140KM on highway

This setup ran a little lean. The test was done as a 2.5L with no EGR,
also note that it was a 2-speed idle test(My bumper couldn't clear the
rollers).
Results: HC Limit 200 - Reading 18 // C0% Limit 1.00 - Reading 0.01.
Hope This helps!

Mark L.

Also, it's all about tuning. Jeff Abrams made much cleaner emissions with his KLDE at 9psi of intercooled SC boost *NO CAT* than with his K8DE did bone stock. How? He leaned it out, and advanced the ignition timing a good bit. You can read more about his setup on www.mazdamaniac.com .

Oh yeah, and about KLZE MX-3's...check this. Torque is cool.

funkdaddysmack October-30th-2002 08:00 AM

Isn't the KLZE intake manifold part of the reason it makes more power, aside from the higher compression, etc? Now, i don't live in a state with emissions tests, but what would be the point of getting a KLZE and slapping a more restrictive intake manifold on it? I mean, besides passing emmisions. Would it be THAT much of a loss to even care?

As David just said, the IM from the Millenia ZE has the EGR hookup.

And yeah, its different, with the square ports, but even with a normal PGT IM, there is still going to be a signifigant performance advantage of the KLZE over the KLDE. The powerband itself is shifted up higher, and the ZE still has more compression, bigger valves, hotter cams.....etc.

"would be the point of getting a KLZE and slapping a more restrictive intake manifold on it?"

Well, we all have catalytic converters on our cars, right? They simply hurt power, and many states dont have emissions, but most people dont take them off. Its a compromise yes....but its still worthwhile.

Thank you for the info, Jesse, I learn something new every day
