Power to the Rex

Well guys, ive been thinking lately about how id like to have a powerful car, or atleast a car for racing and such.... i thought about the idea of doing the engine swap and all kinds of other things to my protege... but why waste it on that, when it is already good... just not the most powerfull car.

so ive decided that this summer im gonna be buying a 1991-94 Rx7, hopefully one a 3rd gen, but a 91 2nd gen would be fine since they cost less, and i could still turbo it....

but what do you guys think, is it worth it to do that or should i just drop the cash on my p5?

Sir Nuke Mar 15, 2002 06:39 PM

Personally.....IF I could have two cars...one that was gassed up and ready for racing....and one that was stylin for running around in....THAT is the way I would go....you can always take the RX7 out crusin and kick some major butt.....and keep the P-5 just for crusin around, lookin good....and pickin up the babes! :D

5SpeedP5 Mar 15, 2002 06:45 PM

exactly what i was thinking! and think of how good my driveway would look with a Red 2002 P5 (that i have now) and a Red 93' or 94' RX-7.....

though its looking like ill be heading towards a 91 RX7, since the book value on those are around 3k, and a 93 and above RX7 really arent cheap (10k min ive seen).... and being 16, even if i do have a good job this summer... itll be hard to crank out 10k easily.... 3k i can manage though

but who knows, it all just depend....

Identity_X Mar 15, 2002 06:55 PM

I would do the opposite.........
the RX-7 that you're going to buy wouldn't be anything interesting since you are buying one for 3K and that's nothing for an RX-7 ........

I would rather spend the 3K on making my current car faster!

now if you want to buy an RX-7 for 10K that would be a different story....., but I might still want to spend the 10K on my current car and make it one of a kind!

something to think about....:D

If I were you, the first thing I would do is be realistic about the money you're going to spend. The 93-95 FD RX-7's are a big leap forward in performance compared to the 86-91 FC cars. They are a BLAST to drive. However, the are also VERY unreliable and fragile, and have a nasty habit of blowing engines. They tend to be BIG money pits. I would do some research before seriously considering buying one. Hey, at least you have a reliable car to drive while it's in the shop :)

The FC cars are not as fast as a FD's, but are still pretty quick (especially the turbos) and are a LOT tougher and less expensive to buy and keep running. The turbos have some of the same reliability problems as the FD; however, the N/A cars are a lot more reliable if properly maintained. They are very fun cars- a lot faster than a P5, and they handle great once you replace the rear suspension bushings :) However, 2 notes: first, don't buy a convertible, they weigh so much more than a coupe (400+ lbs) that they don't perform nearly as well. Second, the earlier 86-88 cars are generally a better performance buy than the later 89-91 models; the later models have more powerful engines, but they weigh a lot more due to additional luxury equipment.

Have you considered a turbo Miata? :D

Good luck,

actually i have considered just a miata in general.... but the rotary just draws me towards the rex.:D

dedicated race car

I'd love to be able to say that I got a 3rd gen RX-7..... Can't you replace the general things that have been known to go bad with them, that's what, not more then 500$ and you change the oil regurarly, and it sounds like he definetely would. And you got yourself a winner? I know that there's no car out there that looks better

5SpeedP5 Mar 16, 2002 03:48 PM

yeah im spending some time this weekend reading up on things like that...

im really thinking partially both, street drivin once in a while and raced.... i dont know what ill race in though.... solo2 or rally or just do club racing.... who knows....

anyway ive been looking around past mazda (even though i really wanna stay in the mazda scene with this car) just to see what i can get with a good performance:price ratio..... looked at some maximas, some 300zx, some various pontiacs, some older beemers, a few chevys, and some toyotas.... i just dont know what i want.... so if you have any ideas, post them, just keep in mind ive got to stay bellow 10k and perferbally around 5k for this car.....

:D

Then forget about FD RX-7's right now. Any FD you can buy for <$8k will probably need over $4k of work just to be fully functional. If you're going racing, you want money left over for tires and hot rod parts. If you buy an FD, that budget will be spent before you even get to the track.

For $5k or less, an 86-91 FC RX-7 would be a great choice. You might also want to look at an M1 Miata, S13 240SX, 2g N/A MR-2, 91-94 Sentra SE-R, 2g CRX Si or Civic Si, or a BG Protege LX/Escort GT. Cheaper, older choices include a 1g MR-2, 1g RX-7 (I love these cars BTW), 1g CRX Si, or an AE86 Toyota Corolla, although all of these cars are becoming difficult to find in good shape nowadays. If you're mainly interested in straight-line speed, an 86-93 Fox3 Mustang or a mkIII Supra would work well. A 4g Camaro, Porsche 944, 2g turbo MR-2, or E30 6-cyl. non-Eta BMW are all good cars, but will probably blow your $10k budget. 3g Camaro/Firebird are darn good performers too, but these cars' generally abysmal assembly quality makes me hesitate to recommend them :)

This should get you started :D

5SpeedP5 Mar 16, 2002 05:47 PM

thanks dude, well im most likely going to stay out of american cars, unless i get a full blow muscle car, and i dont wanna do that...... id love to get a porsche 944, i love those cars.... but i doubt i can get a decent one at a decent price.... a bmw would kick too.... but same there, so i think im looking at a 2nd Gen RX7, a miata, and maybe a 240sx or older 300zx(dont think so though, they are kinda ugly for me)...... but we'll see

hopefully i can get something good here, i want it to look good, and be fast.... two requirement..... so no rust buckets :D :D :D

Get a miata, take it to autocrosses and driving classes, you don't deserve better.

You have more to learn, and keep $3000 put away, cause you'll need it.

:D

Performance to Rice Ratio? lmfao, great wording for smilies

5SpeedP5 Mar 16, 2002 07:32 PM

dont deserver better? wtf does that mean..... i deserve whatever the hell i can afford with my money.... did i say MY MONEY, mommy and daddy wont and dont pay for my cars, i pay for them with my time and money..... so if i want ill go buy a damn rx7 or 300zx.....

and i have more than 3grand put away, and i still manage to pay car payments every months (ive payed off 15k of 18k on my p5... eat it)....

and yes i said price to performance ratio.... i dont wanna spend a shit load of my cash on a car with a zero to 60 of 15seconds, im looking for something that will do a decent 0-60 or that has some good power for a good price..... laugh all you want, but i will find that equality.....

and please register if your gonna post.... that really annoys the hell out of me damnit

Dude I think you need to go to the store and buy yourself a sixer and chill.

I think if you got the $ for the car go for it. My friend has a 92 SVX. That baby is sweet. His daily car. He also went out and bought a 79 camaro for 2K and an 82 T/A for 1500. He aint got much money anymore but I envy him because he has 3 rides he paid for himself. They aren't POS cars either.

5SpeedP5 Mar 16, 2002 07:47 PM

yeah dude, i like earning my stuff.... thats why i got kinda pissed, ive had a long day (lotsa bad customers at work).... and have had lotsa school work lately.....

speaking of a 6pack, i ought to go pick one up :D

5SpeedP5 Mar 16, 2002 08:17 PM

yeah i love the engine, but i dont plan on getting one.... they are just two bulky and not my style..... and like you said not tossable :D

but i dunno im keeping it open, but what does a maxima look like too you guys, same engine as the 300zx just a bit diffrent car, ive driven a few and really like how they drive! if i get one id probably get one between a 90 and 95.....

the 240sx is also looking good, but it really has about the same performance that my p5 has, which kinda makes me look else where still.....

oh i dunno
