My F-150

Alright guys. Need some opinions here. I have the 1983 F-150 which is tuned and everything but illegal as hell. I haven't renewed the inspection in like 3 years (I hardly drive it since I bought the Ranger and then the Protege). It won't pass inspection in its current state (emissions) and I don't know anyone who will issue me an inspection without it passing the emissions portion (anyone from Houston know one?). My apartment place is pissed at me because I am parking it in the apartment parking lot, which is technically against my lease, but I park it away from everybody else in a spot nobody ever parks in. They told me I need to get an inspection sticker or provide proof that I am getting one or I will need to either lease a garage (not a chance in hell, if I lease a garage its for the Protege) or they will tow the F-150. I have a couple of choices. I could give it outright to my father-in-law, who will take good care of it and let me have it back later (I hope). He lives in NM so he won't be able to tow it for a couple of months, which means I have to get a storage shed for it. I could try and sell it but I don't really want to (still my baby). Or last but not least I could try and restore it to emissions compliance. This will take a lot of work and I will have to buy a lot of parts I scrapped off of the original 351 or find suitable alternatives. I will also need to lease a garage or storage shed when I am working on it. So basically I am stuck between giving it away, selling it, or doing a lot of work and keeping it. I thought I would see what you guys thought.

there is one other sorta sneeky thing you can do.....and its would be a bit of a hastle...but still it could be done.

go outside harris county were its NOT REQUIRED to have it smog legal......get a P.O BOX in that county....change the resistration to that P.O. Box address.....then by virtue of the new address you have a confirmed residence in THAT COUNTY...and can register it there...and have it inspected there as well....

sure its a pian in the butt....but how else would you do it? just a thought.

Yeah. But I thought all of the counties near Harris were also required to have emissions (Waller, Montgomery, Galveston).

like I said...it would be a big pain in the butt....its Harris county and all that border it...you would have to go two counties out....

you see....I live in Matagorda county....they couldn't care less about it out here, nor are they required to....they don't even look under your hood here.....they check the lights so make sure they are all burning....the blinkers work...and check the brakes and the horn....if all that is in working order...you get your sticker.

Do you know if it has to be registered in the same county you get the inspection in? I just remembered this one is registered for Seminole. I wonder if they will just let me skip the emissions portion based on that.

YES, you must get it inspected in the county that its registered in. That is why the county I live in isn't flooded with people from the next county over...which has to do the testing....I ask that question of the guy that does my inspections, I have known the guy for a lot of years.

I am not sure how it work there, but a while ago my friend had a car in CT. Basically there you needed to pass emissions testing and when you failed you needed to get it fixed. If the cost of the repair was over a certain amount you could get the garage to give you a waiver form and bring that with you. You then got an exempt vehicle (at least for a year) and a legit emission sticker.

Basically the law wanted clean cars, but they also did not want to force people to choose food or getting the car fixed.

Will your apartment place be satisfied if your are in the process of trying to sell it? If so just stick a for sale sign in the window... buy yourself some time for your father-in-law to come down and get it?

My opinion is to do what Sir Nuke first said. Ya it might be a pain, but at least you'll still have your 'Baby'.
