Plus the engines on 323's are different. The body sytle is not nearly as important as the engine used in the car. 323's have GTX which are 4 WD they also have turbo engines, and many more upgrades. Why do you think 323's are used in rally and protege's are used only on streets? These two cars may look the same from the outside but they are totaly different. Why in the world would mazda make two exact same cars and name they differently?

question for the masses
why is it that we need a forum for every type of protege? can't we use this nicely formatted board and simply make amendments such as a 323 section? It's getting to the point where I expect to see a forum for ONLY "1999 sand mica ES proteges bought in Texas after labor day". It seems like there are as many forums as there are protege owners! I hate trying to visit 50 message boards a day. Let's pool our resources. This just a general statement and not specific for netsteven.

FWIW, the officially imported Gen 3's here are labelled 323's, while the privately imported J-Spec cars are Familias. We drive on the same side of the road as Japan, so there's a thriving business importing pre-owned J-spec cars here.
Here's some pics from the Mazda Hong Kong site:

Ok I think that the engine is the difference in most cars. THE ENGINE MAKES A BIG DIFFERENCE. Your saying in Japan or other places there is a bigger choice of the engine you put into your car.. Well, most of us are from the US not Japan or some other country. If your like a honda guy that only worries about making mods to the body of the car then I can see why you think they are the same...but, if you like to get performance out of your engine then you should learn a thing or two... I do know my stuff about 323's, I just dont care for proteges never had one never will... Just like that.

"I just dont care for proteges never had one never will"
This statement begs the question: what are you doing on a forum called "Protege Owners Club"? Maybe you should try your recruiting at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/323gtx

323/protege confusion
damn, don't you get it, net? the car's the same no matter what engine it has. it can be a 323 with a 1,3 potatochpper or a 323 2.0 sport but underneath, it's the SAME 323. the protege's no different.
and the idea of advertising a competing forum here- what's with that?
