As long as the network isnt secured. If so you need a password to get on that network. My dad and I are running a SMC wireless router with our DSL. I have 4 computers and a laptop here at the house and its nice being able to be anywhere in the house and still get on the net. Only one comp is wired to the router. Now I just need to get my comp working properly so I can get some LAN games goin with my dad. FYI- My dad is a Network administrator

 

Good stuff, Bruce. I was thinking about getting a wireless router for my apartment, between my roomate and I, we have like 5 PCs including my work laptop (which has builtin wireless a&b I think)... We have a wired network now that works fine.

I'm not really too concerned with the speed of the wireless, I don't plan on doing a whole lot of file transfers, if I needed to, I could plug into the switch. A or B would be a lot faster than your cable modem could ever do, but G is also a good option.

 

Man Ima have to go wireless. I am already convincing my dad of getting it and then gettin neighbors to pay for some of it for like 20 bucks each.

 

We just replaced our old Linksys BEFSR41 v2
with a DLink DI-614+

we use the Wirelesss AP for the laptop..

seems to work pretty good around the house for browsing the net and stuffs..

anyway I was having problems trying to set up my dlink cabeled router so my computers could network . I can't seem to get the two computers to Link together .. I don't know why

well the problem I am having is that , when using the network setup wizard in xp . I can't get the 2 computers to see each other. I want the main cpu to be the main computer and the notebook to be like a user and be able to get files and so forth.
I don't know if I need a HUB or what , because right now I only have a D-Link Router for the cable modem. So I am wondering if that is the problem. The wireless will be taking the place of the Router , but I am not sure if I will still have the same problems.

I have a home network set up now using the d-link phoneline internet to share internet and stuff, I also have my xbox hooked into the network through ethernet card.

Works really good now but were going to be gettin a new laptop and another computer so well be picking up a wireless router by the end of the day costco is offering the dlink 614+ with a notebook card for like $90 after mail in rebate and i think compusa is offering it even cheaper.

 

You can address each computer by its IP address. If you goto
the router info page, it should show you all connected devices
and their names. You just then map to that device. Also you will
need to enable sharing and setup to let someone log in and use
a shared part of your system or the whole thing.

Personally I don't like the DLink products. Also for someone with
just a cable modem the G doesn't make any difference in internet
connectivity, since the cable modem is the bottleneck. If you don't play
lots of head to head games or transfer a LOT of data between
your home computers then the 802.11b is the most cost effective
wireless solution. The RANGE on the 802.11b in a home environment is greater than the higher frequency G stuff.

 

The range is greater because most home products run at 2.4ghz.

But I will try what you said with IP addresses . I am hoping I can get it to work . I mainly wanted the wireless router for when I am outside. downstairs or next door..
