how?

I know this is kinda stupid but how is a new car brought? I know you have to go to the dealership and everything, but when do you actually pick up the car and drive home? don't you need to get the license plate and # first? you need to put it on the bumper before you drive it home right?

I know this might look silly but I want to know all this before I go to the dealer. You guys won't mind helpin' right?

My Mazda dealer is located near a licensing company. I did all the paperwork and then Mazda gave me a piece of paper with all the necessary information to license the car(ownership, VIN, yadda yadda). I left the car at Mazda, got a ride to the licensing place. I transfered plates so Mazda already put them on for me, I just had to pay the insurance fees for the newer better vehicle. Once the insurance is paid I got a temporary registration sheet, I got a ride back to Mazda and drove my car home.

So bring a friend or family member with their own vehicle to help you out.

Insurance: I gave the dealer my insurance company name and contact info the day I closed the deal (Saturday). I then went home and called the insurance folks and told them that the dealer would be calling with info on a car to be added to my policy and what I wanted from them. Then the dealer called them and gave them the info. The insurance co. then faxed over temporary insurance cards (you *need* to have confirmation of insurance in NY state before you can register a car).

Plates/registration: when I got mine they charged a few bucks for the plates, registration, and the inspection. It was totally hands off for me

So... on Monday night I went to the delaer and they had the temporary registration (the full one comes in the mail after a month or so), insurance info, inspection sticker, and plates all set up on the car and ready to go. I just had to drive it off the lot.

With that little hassle in getting it all done it was worth the 60 bucks (which I think is not much more than if I had done it all myself).

i think all states give you 15-30 days to get your plates and pay your taxes. but the dealer can also take care of it for you. washington will send your plates in the mail.

Piece of cake... the registry to get plate(s) was closed when i picked mine up... my dealer was nice enough to let me keep the dealer plate overnight.... my insurance co. was phoned... given the VIN/serial #... they faxed back the temporary insurance.

Took the bill of sale...the insurance...to the registry... $50 bucks later...voila...new plate! (love the fact that in this province we don't have to use a front plate)

although the license plate frame is crappy... (see my other thread)

Oh yeah...got pics in the photo gallery too!

Silver - 5spd - Moonroof - bug deflector - (tinting to come)
