Clean or replace your air filter frequently, make sure your tires are well inflated and balanced, check your allignment, frequent inspection of spark plugs and replacement if needed .. and lastly driving like a grandma which never happens with me

The biggest thing is just watching your rpm's - it's rpm that primarily determines fuel usage, not how much you mash the pedal. For around town driving keep it 2500rpm or under all the time and you'll notice a nice improvement.

Other than that, use your momentum as much as possible - shift into neutral and coast up to stop lights, leave plenty of room between you and the car in front so you use brakes as little as possible, maintain a constant speed and let the car slow a bit going up hills.

Maintenance wise, always always keep a fresh air filter and spark plugs in the car. Regularly check tire pressure, and keep it a psi or two above what's recommended.

with Owning 2 turbo'd Mazdas, paying 3.40 a gallon sucks. But I knew I was not really getting a Prius. The main thing is check air pressure, oil changes, and air filters as posted above are all great ideas.

accelerating really slowly, and coasting in neutral to stop lights.

oh, and i think this whole $1.079 (cdn) a litre gas is pure ****.
i heard on the radio the other day that gas companies are overcharging by 15 cents a litre... so we should be paying 85 cents... which, isnt great, but it's much better

and i also think that fossil fuels dont regenerate is bull too.
if fossil fuels just come from dead animals and plants being pressed together for millions of years, wouldnt it slowly regenerate??

i still think this whole gas **** is f*cking bull.. gas costs next to nothing over in Iraq.
im just hoping we find a HUGE oil deposit sometime soon.

my last fill up cost me $50 cdn.... that's bull!!!

and yet i still drive whatever ever way i want... i usually get 350km's on a tank in the city.

coasting in neutral doesn't save gas vs being in gear at 0% throttle.. the ECU actually shuts off the fuel injectors when you do that, but when you are in neutral it has to spit fuel to keep idle.

I turboed my car knowing full well that gas prices were high, but here in the states I'm still only paying $3.55USD per gallon so it's really not that bad. I have to fill up ever 6 days or so, less if there's an autocross on a given weekend. It costs like 40 bucks or so to fill up.

If it bothered me enough I'd vow to ride my bike everywhere.

I will be riding my bike to work more often once finals are over and my schedule becomes wide open again yay

as for fossil fuels regenerating.. no, it takes a LONG time but we're using it up way faster than it is being made. The excuse for why prices have spiked recently is that there were problems with some of the refineries.. In reality, it's totally a supply/demand situation. If people didn't keep paying for it, the demand would go down, the supply would become stagnant, and prices would drop.

It's capitalism, deal with it or move somewhere where you don't have to

The only reality is that the oil companies have us bent over a barrel ...

Take some time to ready about the Russian technologies with deep oil exploration. Much of what they're recovering simply is not fossil fuel, it's abiotic hydrocarbons. And now they're the Worlds #1 oil producer. Why don't Western oil companies want us to know the truth of just how much deep non-fossil oil there is? Simple, then they wouldn't be able to feed us this bullshit story of how it's running out. If all hydrocarbons are formed from a bacterial process with rotting plants and animals, then why is one of Saturns moons almost completely covered in it?

you can free up the flow both into and out of the engine. it will run more efficiently. but that's a suspicious "gas conscious" mod, we all know why.

for long trips, when slowed by trucks and cars, don't drop a gear or two and gun it back to your desired speed. if you can, keep in top gear and slowly get up to speed. 65-70 mph is a 2nd gen pro's best mpg speed. i got 41 on a 400 mile leg! (record for me and the pro).

on the threadjack: we haven't had a new refinery built in 30 years or so (thanks, greenies, you are awesome...). obviously there are more cars sold and on the road today than back then. demand up, supply artificially kept low. add to that some more nice environmental laws restricting ability to drill either off our shores or in anwar (in alaska)--where we could drastically reduce our percentage of foreign dependance on oil--and it's a good day for gas prices in the States...

when comming to a light on an automatic car, put it in neutral, then shift back to D when the light turns green (told to me by an old guy, i wanted to argue him...but ....he's old)

Seafoam. I put it in my gas every 3K miles, in the intake every 6K miles, and in my oil every 6K miles. Keeps the carbon buildup under control and the injectors clean.

I get 38mpg highway on 89 octane non-reformulated gasoline.

I don't know how much good that would really do though .. cuz I'd rather save my tranny from extra wear & tear than save a couple bucks on gas.

Brake pads are cheaper than transmissions, haha. Besides, an automatic transmission seems to idle lower in D gear (1st at a stop) than in idle/park.
