A Fiat: Why?

This has got to be the weirdest dashboard I have ever seen. The car’s ugly too.

I guess they go hand in hand... ugly on the outside, ugly on the inside... at least it is a consistent message ;)

LOL
Not too beautiful but maybe it's practical or something

sweet jebus that's an ugly car. that's worse than that new renault.

Interesting!

I drove a car just like that when I was in France last year-- I agree: Along with being ugly, it's a weird, non-standard design.

At any rate, the shifter being mounted higher on the dash, although unsightly, doesn't feel all that uncomfortable, actually. I got used to it pretty quickly, and it worked well. The instrument panel was in the center in the car I drove, though, which is where it friggin' belongs. NOT in the middle of the dash (like in the weird-ass Toyota Echo).

I have read some reviews on this "mini van" in the British car magazines and they gave it a good write up. :)

Or in new Nissan Primera.
And stick placement is from new Honda Civic
This is 21st century and next cars will fly:D

Gauge placement....what a SCREW-UP!! its bad enough to have to take your eyes off the road and just look down to see your guages...but to have to look down and to the right? give me a break...what were those idiots thinking..

The shifter on the other hand...is of Rally Car design....so you don't have to move your hand so far from the steering wheel to shift...and put it BACK ON THE WHEEL! lol

NOW, the OUTSIDE of this mess.....I OFFICIALLY cast my vote for this THING as the biggest mistake to ever hit the streets of any country......we are talking WAY past fugly!

turbonium959 August-21st-2002 02:25 PM

See that is what I do not understand about fellows Europeans ( I was born there). They design cars for looks, not for function. It seems as though they do not take in consideration the price of manufacturing. Just look at that car! It is fugly inside and out. No wonder FIAT is in sh*t loads of trouble. They should get a new head designer.

kenp1972 August-21st-2002 02:32 PM

What an ass ugly car. It looks like they cut the roof off a compact and guled on a minivan. It should have been aborted with birth defects like that.

Remember that episode where Homer Simpson helped his rich brother design a car......

yeah....

Well kind of, but having the stick come out of the dash is not new. This is common in European cars thur out the years. 2CV to name one had it. But if you look at older American cars from the 20's & 30'S like Stutz, Auburn, REO, Peerless, & Essex-Terraplane had the shifter come out of the dash.

One of my coworkers had a 67 Merc pickup with a 3 in the three. Looked like a automatic and was really fun to drive. That was truly rally style...

On the placement of the gauges, I would guess not many of you have driven an echo since you are ripping into the gauge cluster so handily. A friend of mine got one for getting into law (lawyer in an echo, heh) and I have driven it quite a few times. The first time you look at the gauges it is kind of weird but after a bit it is a lot easier on you. You just kind of twist your head slightly and you never have to look through your hands or the steering wheel. I don't think you guys should rag on it until you have actually tried it, it ain't that bad.

well in reality...anything short of a true HUD is a waste of time while you are driving...as we all know, we FEEL our cars as we drive...and we HEAR/LISTEN to them as well.....the guages are only there for when we are truely standing still, or going incredibly slow. And of course the ONLY time we REALLY look at the guages while at speed is that automatic response to look at the speedo the moment you see a cop!!! lol
