2nd car to go to work , good idea/bad idea??

I am going to be putting a new motor in my Protege and I am contemplating to purchase a second car , a hatchback to use to go to work and back and to school and so forth , ofcourse the second car will get a little bit of love also .. But I am wondering what most people on here would think , if that would be a bad idea or a good idea. I mean I intend to make my second gen a very fast car, but I don't want to drive the car 24/7 .. I have been looking at a 1991 honda civic hatchback and also a 1990 mazda 323(if the damn girl would ever get back in contact with me$500) . I really want the 323 to drop the 1.8 in at a later date , but for know I just want it for convenience reasons , as stated above,,, but I was curious what do you guys think ,, check out the poll and also type out any opinions
thanks
Bruce

I think a second car works out pretty well to save wear and tear for commuting.. I hate driving my Protege to my shopping plaza for ~8 hours of daily abuse to people who don't care.. etc. Protege's sheetmetal shows anything that taps it, if it were a VW I'd have 25% of the dings visible b/c of metal alone hehe :(

I've got a 90 Caprice as a commuter and despite having half the MPG of the Protege when it comes to fuel economy its great and fun in the snow

If you have a place to park the car, go for it, insurance won't run much more by adding one.

I know it will be ALOT more convenient should I want to do anything drastic to the Protege that would normally leave me without it for a week or two.. (like body shop work)

A 323 seems like it would be alot of fun.. plus it probably gets in the 30s for fuel economy if your commute is long (mine isn't, luckily)

Yeah, yeah! A little hatchback.
Like a 240SX or maybe a Starion...:p

Get the second car. I use my Pro as my daily driver and have my Miata for racing.

The only problem that you'll encounter is that you'll end up getting attached to your second car and want to start dumping money into it.

FWIW, I say get a 2ng Gen Escort GT. Not a bad looking car, has a Mazda BP8 Motor and is a hatchback.

I was considering a escort, but rember I am trying to stay below 600 bucks , as I have to replace the money I spend on buying this car
I do want a second car though , I sware it would be so convenient .. and plus if I get the 323 , I can always drop a BP in it later, I even would like to get it in automatic to make life that much easier..

sounds like a good idea! thats what i did basically, but my second car became my favorite :D

the 323 would be a fun little car, personally id recommend looking for a old SE-R... ive seen them go for sub 1000 dollars before, with a good engine

just an idea, from a biased person :D

I used to run two cars, back when I had my 79' Camaro.

The Camaro was of no use to me for work - I need more space - but I couldn't bear the thought of selling it at the time.

So I used to have another beater for work - hatchbacks, minivans, station wagons - whatever I could get for a few hundred bucks, drive for while, and throw away. Disposable cars!

I even took my Camaro off the road for a few winters - I knew I wouldn't be driving it much, so to save on the insurance I'd just cancel the coverage, un-register it, and store it wherever I could for the winter. I even had a set of old, unregistered license plates that I'd slap on it if I had to park it in the street.

It worked out. But eventually, I just sold it. Now I have my P5 for work and play.

A second car, if you can afford it, is great. I had plenty of time to work on my Camaro when I had something else to drive. It was great! Wouldn't suit me to do it now, unless I had a "project car", which might be something for the future.

If you have the place to keep two cars, and can afford it, go for it!

Do it. It is a great Idea. I did it for Mileage, Insurance, and Weather issues.

The Protege is the Mileage Ho - and the Mustang is the weekend fun car.

The insurance is actually $75 every 6 months cheaper than it was with just the Mustang. I put the Mustang on less than 5K miles a year.

Plus the gas mileage with 4.10 gears in the Mustang is only like 18-19 when I am not raggin on it.

The Mustang also doesn't have a ding in it and its almost 4 years old. The Protege got its first small one the other day, but I still find myself parking the Protege like I did the Mustang. On the ends and away from everyone.

Do it you will love it. Plus when you want to do work on one you can use the other to get around and get parts.

check it out

I found a guy selling his 1991 nissan sentra se-r , car comes with power windows, locks , sunroof , the fast motor , plenty of aftermarket (plus turbo support and NA support) body kits, you name it it's there .... the guy wants 1000 dollars , but I told him I would give him 800 , but if he calls me back tonight I will consider giving him 900...

I am also considering a honda civic also ,, would not be a bad idea to get one, parts are everywhere and for a daily driver. it would be sweet ...

Basically the car must have a sunroof ,.. I have to have that ,,.. I mean 2 cars with no sunroof is rediculous, we will see what happens though

yes you are so right , the damn cars are up there, and i mean the egg shape ones , the 92... god... I want a sunroof in the car to , cause I mean ,, cmon....lol ... so I don't know if I will bother with the civic ,.. but notice with the se-r, it already has a strong motor, that is what I want. something with some guts, so I don't have to sit there and convert the motor ,,

also looking into a ford escort to
the lx came with sunroofs in some models

Bruce....getting a second car to take the abuse of everyday driving and saving the Pro for sunny days....and crusin on the weekends is a great idea.....

after all.....my P5 is my toy....I drive my beater truck on days that the sun don't shine and its nasty out.....or when going somewhere I would just as soon NOT park my car unattended.

Having two cars is obscenly convinient. My 323 sits most of the time since it's a work in progress, and the Pro takes most of the driving. Although, I really don't drive that much anyhow, work is about a mile away, the Y is another mile. Maybe 5 miles a day? hehehe, look out! :D

I got my Pro for $800, man oh man what a sweet deal... it has a sunroof, too hehehehe :D

Not if you catch someone that needs money really bad. I paid $500 fr my car 2 years ago and it just now started needing stuff like struts and axles, water pump, etc.

you paid 800 for your pro or your 323 ...
I know someone selling a 323 for 500 , I contacted her numerous times and she contacted me , but we keep missing each other, i can never seem to set up with her to see the damn car,, I am supposed to look at a 92 civic hatch on saturday , when the lady emails me back to confirm , and I know of 91 civic hatch that a person is selling,
the civic will be an easy car to get rid of when I am ready though , that is what is so good about it .... I could probably flip it and get 1500 for it , even though I would have only paid 700 lol ... imagine that
