Looking For: spicy mazdaspeed protege or a miata

I'm just going to post links to cars I find online.. if anyone else finds any post them up

I will try and post all that I find here but I'm also bookmarking them all on del.icio.us here: http://del.icio.us/clauretano/cars
Here are my requirements:

Miata:
- pretty much any colour is fair game, but I really hate the tan interior so yeah without that.
- must have an LSD. From what I remember, on the NB miata if it has a power retractable antenna it has an LSD.
- no leather seats.. but if there's the ultimate miata with crazy low miles at a great price I think I'll live with the leather seats.. I can always trade for someone who wants leather.
- Low mileage. I'm really liking the 20k mile Miatas I'm able to find, yay for lots of people using them as weekend-only cars.
- No rust. When I look on autotrader I'm searching within 500 miles of Miami.. but yeah just anywhere that it doesn't snow.
- Mazdaspeed MX-5 is a plus, but it's incredibly difficult to find without leather seats. I dunno if I'm a fan of the red cloth seats I've found.

Mazdaspeed Protege:
- must be orange
- must be mint, no rust, and stock.
- must be low mileage (relative to it being a 2003).

Other cars (if you're really that bored to find cars for me):
- I really like hatches/wagons
- I'm not a fan of front wheel drive. Basically, it needs to handle as well as a Mazdaspeed Protege or Mini Cooper S (hence those are the only two FWD cars I am looking at)
- I like getting over 30mpg highway because I do a lot of driving
- I really don't have a color preference, I'm very open.
- Absolutely must be a manual transmission.. pisses me off because I set that as a requirement on Autotrader but people have automatics listed as manuals on there.. argh
- No rust, and low mileage is a big plus.

um I found a nice non-mazda
http://www.autotrader.com/dealers/dd...ler_id=2980828

and it's silver
http://images.autotrader.com/images/..._A.562x421.jpg

pretty high mileage and german so I wouldn't trust high mileage.. I only found it because I was checking that shop because it's the only shop I'd trust in Rochester (not that I've taken my car there but a roommate has and it's a GREAT shop for euro cars).

another

but it's an 03 and the 03 has all sorts of undesirable stuff goin on.

Have you considered an MP3 by any chance?

Unless you found a yellow one, no. A yellow MP3 I would do but it would be impossible to find a low mileage one. Then I'd also have to put a LOT of money into it.

_Kansei_ November-26th-2007 01:40 PM

That silver P5.. costs more than my P5 did when I bought mine in Feb 2004 (a 2002.5 model made in June 2002) with 8k miles on it.

<3 gremlin though :)

3rd gen Proteges are such handsome vehicles!

But their driveline inadequacies preclude me from considering them for future purchases.

Miatas have none of those issues.

Oh, and the LSD is a standalone option, not correlated to the retractable antenna.

D-rock240 November-26th-2007 02:49 PM

I vote for a spicy :)

I checked autotrader and the only spicy MSP in my area has like 75k miles or something

from what I read on miata.net the trim level or package that the retractable antenna came in also gave LSD or something like that.. it's the only easy way to know.

JoshP5 November-26th-2007 05:48 PM

That makes no sense at all. What does a retractable antenna have to do with the LSD?

I had the LS package, which came with dead cow skin, Bose audio (rocks), 15" rims, body kit, and typically ridiculously ineffective fog lights. It took more than a month to locate one with my other preferences--no ABS and an LSD. I recall the LSD and ABS are standalone options. I'm sure to within machine epsilon the retractable antenna came with the LS package.

Basically.. I think it's just the total base ones that have no power antenna. also base when they have no LSD. I can check the miata.net page when I get back from the hospital. 99% sure I've seen cloth seat with retractable antenna.. but this all might have been when I was researching NA miatas a few months ago.

Right now I'm in an effing Malibu, and no not the shockingly not horrible new gen.

wrx wagon but without the ugly and with completely redesigned aluminum front suspension and suprisingly upscale interior.. the black and white leather looks AMAZING even though I hate leather

JoshP5 November-26th-2007 06:02 PM

Yeah, cruising eBaymotors, I can't conclusively tell. Some NBs have antennas up, some down, and none of them list the LSD as an option. But the LSD is something a lot of owners would probably just forget about and not list.

Sorry to crap up your thread.

JoshP5 November-26th-2007 06:03 PM

Oooh! 9-2x. I like. Also has the STI's faster steering rack!

I'm thinking about selling my Miata...if you were a little closer, I'd let you test drive it. :)

! that's very nice, and I can only assume it was well maintained and driven hard all the time :)

Is the supercharger nice and low boost?

190rwhp @ 6psi on a Mustang Dyno. :)

It's been to the track three times, and on the touge countless times...48k on the clock with Mobile1 in the engine and NEO in the gearbox and diff from Day 1.

Time for a little trip to cali!!

_Kansei_ November-26th-2007 08:34 PM

I've never been outdoors west of Pittsburgh (totally serious).

my insurance company is going to give me like $5 for my car (realistically I don't expect over $4000) so yeah.. who knows if I can get anything over a junker.

macdaddyslomo November-26th-2007 10:34 PM

go with the saabaru...i was VERY seriously considering one, before i got the focus, it just wasnt going to work with what i needed with financing, and fuel mileage...even a linear is nice(non turbo) but the aero(turbo) is badass !

_Kansei_ November-26th-2007 10:45 PM

Considering what I'll get for my car if it's a write-off the saabaru won't happen. I'll be lucky if I can find a second gen protege that runs for $4k. No way can I finance.. no job until ~ september.

macdaddyslomo November-27th-2007 07:36 AM

wholesale on your car is like $5500...they're giving you less ?

what exactly is wrong with your car ??? maybe you can fix it ?

I don't know what they'll give, I'm just guessing. Either way.. no matter what they give me, it doesn't even pay for half of a stock Protege5 so basically if my car is totalled I'm going to have to drive some junker after pouring my heart, soul, and hard-earned money into my Protege --all because some idiot didn't get the memo that traffic was completely stopped and had been for a WHILE.

If it isn't totalled, I'm also screwed because my carfax report will show that the car was in two serious accidents, the car is rusting, etc. No one would buy it after seeing the carfax, no dealer would take it as trade because of the mods (obviously I would go 'back to stock' but it would take many weekends of work to do so)..

why not take what they give you, then see if they'll let you have the car cheap...most ins companies are just going to take salvage value for the car...then use the money you get to repair the car...looks like it just needs a couple of bumpers from the pics you took...

2003 Mazda Protege MAZDASPEED- Spicy Orange - 37k

2003 MAZDASPEED PROTEGE 2.0L Turbo This is a very nice very fast car. I'm sad to see it go but I'm starting my own company and need the money for the business. The car has a few upgrades, like corksport exhuast, large front mount intercooler, and shortshifter, plus a few more extras. If you have any questions about the car feel free to email or call me at anytime.

Jacksonville, FL 32259 = NO SNOW

_Kansei_ November-27th-2007 04:19 PM

yeah that's too modded for my taste. I'd have to un-mod the car to like it (i.e. no CF hood, get the wheels recoated, etc).

Jackelope November-27th-2007 04:44 PM

low mileage though ;)

KrayzieFox November-28th-2007 08:19 AM

It's not a spicy .. but a damn nice MSP!

_Kansei_ November-28th-2007 02:33 PM

eww titanium (no offense)

_Kansei_ November-28th-2007 04:23 PM

tomorrow morning I have to drive back to syracuse (it took me three hours to get there today.. I had to keep pulling over at every rest stop to do something about the wrenching back pain.. today was definitely the worst day so far) to sign papers.. *sigh* I wish my insurance agent called me 30 minutes before he did, I was barely on my way back but didn't want to add an hour to my drive time today when I'm driving the gas-guzzling v6.

I got all my stuff out of the car.. including radar detector, wideband, pioneer premier unit (I got the faceplate earlier), mazdaspeed floormats, infinity basslink.. it was sad picking apart my car like it was some dead carcass.

So tomorrow they open at 7:30.. I will be there as close to that as humanly possible to sign the paperwork. It isn't the "preferred" shop but I looked into the preferred shop http://nscollision.com/ and I don't really like what I read. It's just some big chain shop that is all about doing things as cheaply as possible.. not a fan.

The shop the car is at is CLEAN inside, very new (new building.. the company has been around since the 70s) and gigantic. There were two FDs in the parking lot, I wish one of them was their complimentary rental car :P

I had a one on one with the service manager to go over all my concerns. Aftermarket parts will not be used, the rear liftgate will be a used part but if it isn't just a matter of sand, weld badge holes, and repaint, it won't be used and a new one will be instead. --stuff like that. I even toured their really nice ppg paint booth and curing room (mm felt nice.. there was just a car in it so it was like 100 still :D ).

So that brings me to this. My insurance company thinks the car will not be totalled, but still isn't sure as the rear hatch cannot be opened. Once the body shop pries it open tomorrow, they will appraise again. I made it clear to the insurance agent I spoke to today (a car enthusiast myself) that if it means ignoring broken pieces of trim plastic inside the trunk, not fixing the scuff on the bumper, or using aftermarket taillights to have my car be worth repairing to them that I am ok with it. I want my baby back :'(

_Kansei_ November-28th-2007 04:30 PM

So yes.. hmm what changes will I be making?

I have a few ideas so far:
- rear bumper valance flat black, gloss black, or a metallic gunmetal that matches my wheels (I actually know the PPG code for that). Maybe not all of the valance.. maybe just the indented part, or just the bar that wraps around the indented part... or some mix.. really not sure where I'll go with this but it's something I definitely want to explore.
- If the break on the exhaust is the catback, or if I find damage to the exhaust tip caused by the accident --maybe a different catback? I'd have to go custom or maybe magnaflow (if their catback is 2.5" piping). Not a fan of anything else.
- Shaved badges on trunk. This is happening no matter what. I like my badges (especially since they are all gloss black and the 323F badge and such).. and I can still put them on, but just glued on :) no holes baby!!
- Maybe slightly darker tint on the rear glass. It's 20% now though so I doubt I'll do anything here.
- JDM or EDM taillights.. maybe. Insurance agent said it is 108 for a single aftermarket factory replica taillight. I know I can get the JDM pair for around 200. I'd go for it.. since it's the same price and all. Something is broken with the passenger side taillight, it wobbles a LOT. I'd have to do something with them though.. red out over the turn signal or something.
- .. rear spoiler? It would be easy enough to weld the holes shut for the stock spoiler, so I could get the autoexe spoiler and not have unsightly plugs. Since the spoiler wasn't damaged though.. this would be out of pocket and I have no job so it probably won't happen --unless I can have them just fill some of the holes, the ones you'd see with the autoexe, then break my stock spoiler so that it only needs like 2 holes to mount. I don't think I could go spoilerless for like 9 months until I have cash haha.

Unexpected extras:
- rusting rear fenders will be fixed.. and not just repainted, really fixed.
- rear fenders might be getting rolled.. I talked to them about this and it's definitely something they can do :)
- pool of water in the driver's footwell today. Body shop will take care of it :)

JoshP5 November-28th-2007 04:55 PM

Cats have nine lives. Your P5 has at least three. Hopefully none more will be required.

_Kansei_ November-28th-2007 05:29 PM

um yeah if it needs more I'll just off myself. It should only be my DD through September :P

CTt3P5 November-28th-2007 08:34 PM

Nice to hear about the potential outcome. I have always liked your P5 and it would be a shame to see her go out like this. She deserves the head spot at your ranch when you retire her for good! :) And it sounds like you have some good things instore as well....totally cool about getting your fenders 'fixed'!

_Kansei_ November-28th-2007 09:03 PM

she will never be retired for good. I have dreams but they require that I have a miata as a second car.. then comes engine swap time :D
