Transmission switch

my 3 is an automatic with the tiptronic but i want a manual... does anybody know how much it would cost to get a manual transmission in my car?

Roddimus Prime September-11th-2004 05:15 PM

why didn't you just buy a manual?? the cost would be outragiously rediculous. You should've thought ahead!

ImportdRacerRoxy September-11th-2004 05:39 PM

um, it was all out of my control... i was at school and my daddy went up to mazda and bought me a car and then he picked me up from school and was like, "i bought you a car, lets go get it." I wanted a manual but i think my mommy was against it... "you need to concentrate on the road and being safe, not switching gears."

macdaddyslomo September-11th-2004 06:46 PM

not cost effective..it would cost less to trade it in and buy a manual than to try a swap, ESPECIALLY on a car as new as a 3

Roddimus Prime September-11th-2004 07:50 PM

cost prohibitive....

I wish my folks showed up with a new 3 for me...auto or not I'd be happy

vielster September-14th-2004 09:49 AM

If "mommy and daddy" spent close to $20k on a car for you, just drive it be happy...I'm sure they would be exstatic to find out their daughter isn't content with her brand spanking new car that she didn't have to earn....and I'm sure they'd be even more happy to find out that you've taken it up to the govenor on several occasions....I've got an idea...why don't you just go total the car, and then ask them to get you another one that's stick shift!

Give an inch and they'll want a mile...

BadAzLava3 September-16th-2004 03:36 PM

It's not just swapping part for part, it's wiring, switches, solenoids, vaccum lines and different accessories items located throughout the engine bay.

Best to say thank you and drive it, and trade it out for what you really want after a decent interval...like when the Mazdaspeed 3 shows up next year.

BTW, ask you folks if they want to adopt me, hard to pass on a free car from the folks.

ya i agree with you guys, i should just be happy with my car considering i dont pay for it or the insurance. my parents threw out 25 k for it... the thing is though, all my life i always got whatever i wanted or needed so i never really realized how lucky i was and i never really appreciated what i have. my parents caught me skipping 3 periods of school last week and they took everything that i took for granted away. now i realize how lucky i am... you guys also helped out with all your input.

Protege_Joe November-17th-2004 05:32 PM

just stay with he auto nothing wrong with them..just a tad bit slower then there manual...im getting a stall convester put on my protege...and maybe a shift kit...i recommend you do the same.

ImportdRacerRoxy November-17th-2004 06:23 PM

what are those and what do they do?

Monzsta November-18th-2004 05:09 AM

Roxy, he means a shift kit and converter. Basically, the transmission gets pulled out of the car and "Hot Rodded". I wouldn't reccommend this yet. The 3 is so new, the aftermarket is having a hard time keeping up. Soon, they'll have an aftermarket (diablo, Jet, Superchip) computer programmer that will eek out a few more hp from the engine, and also allow firmer and later shifts electronically. The shift rate and timing are controlled by the computer, so any modifications done to the transmission won't work. It has to be programmed in.
