Tech Operating question

Test drove a 08 mazda 3 and have a question on the workings of the tach. When I stomp on the gas) the tach swings all the way up (high RPM's) much faster than the speed indicator. Is this normal? At what RPM do you hit the power band with an automatic.

Thanks in advance for your prompt reply. I am holding off the seller until I can find out if this is normal for the 3

The tach is somewhat slow to respond, same with the speedo if you look closely. It's damped for multiple reasons i'm sure, one is to keep the electronic control from needing to regulate as well, another is to keep the needle from jiggling with vibration or when going around corners etc...
Any other questions after your test drive?

Thanks for the reply. Car seemed slugish(s) off the line, maybe it was the 17 inch wheels. Drove a bases yesterday and it seemed to have better pick-up, but did not have the equipment I was looking for. Meanwhile I have my mx-5 and grocery wagon to get around with.
