SO... about 2 months ago my 2004 Mazda 3 2.3L started bogging down at idle and just idling really rough in general, but no engine light. I changed the plugs and wires as general maintenance and cleaned the injectors. Nothing seemed to work 'til it finally threw a CEL giving code P0455.


According to AutoZone it said to inspect the gas cap or the Vapor Purge Valve. Gas cap looked like new and doesn't appear to have any leaks. I then ordered and changed out the Purge Control Valve. Everything ran much smoother again, but about 4 days later I got a CEL again. Same code. Cleared the code and it came back again a week later but then within 3 days went out again on its own.


Ordered another Purge Valve under warranty and swapped them out even thought he CEL was not on, and within ten minutes of driving the CEL came on again quoting P0455. What can I do from here? Luckily it seems to still be idling smoothly, but the CEL keeps going off for unknown reasons.

UPDATE: I was incorrect on the most recent CEL code. The codes it threw directly after installing the second new Purge Valve was a P2187 code (twice), not a P0455 as it had so many times before.


Any help would be greatly appreciated.


Not sure if related at all, but I tightened the gas cap down about 15 clicks and the next time I drove it the CEL went out. Could it reallybe that simple?

CEL came on again with P2187 then went out again... Then came back on again... What in the world?!?!
