2.0 vs 2.3 engine differences?

2.0 vs 2.3 engine differences?
Is it just the displacement/ stroke giving more power? In particular a 2009 vs a 2009. Or dose the 2.3 use other upgrades too.
I bought a 2.0 after testing a 2.3 and went for the better fuel efficency since I didnt find either to really be all that quick. Really enjoying this car and am interested in the different makes.
