Fire extinguisher installation in Mazda 3 Sport

After many years of carrying a fire extinguisher in the back of my Mazda 3 Sport GS where (a) it wasn’t easily accessible (b) it tended to roll around during fast cornering and (c) it could end up being a missile in a collision I decided to install it in a fixed, easily accessible location. (Also, I was going to take my MZ3 lapping and I wanted the fire extinguisher to be secured in the car.) After a tip from a fellow forum member I decided to locate it in the passenger side foot well. If you’re interested, here’s how I installed it:

1. Remove passenger side foot well trim (one popper-type attachment)

2. Make t-bracket. I used 1/8” x 1 ½” aluminum, riveted together at the T.

3. Attach t-bracket to existing holes in metal frame.

4. Attach fire extinguisher holder to t-bracket.

5. If you want to remove the fire extinguisher, just unbolt the fire extinguisher bracket from the t-bracket and put the passenger side foot well trim back on. If you’ve bent the t-bracket to fit, the foot well trim should fit over the t-bracket.

Are you really that worried about your car catching fire after taking it on a road course or did you just think it looks cool?

2011 Time Attack Regs:

A fire suppression system is required for:

i) All 'Modified' class vehicles, except those which are licensed for street
use and competing on DOT approved tires.

ii) Any production based vehicles in 'Unlimited' class.

The minimum fire suppresion system requirement is a fully charged 2.5
lb. (5BC) (or larger) fire extinguisher securely attached to the interior
and in a position and manner readily accessible to both the driver and
a Marshal.

If you were trapped inside your burning car, wouldn't you be happy if I happened to stop by with a fire extinguisher that was easily accessible to me and others? Thought so.
