Hello, I'm trying to confirm if its safe and will not cause problems to switch to using premium fuel in my 03 Mazda Protege5. I am the original owner and I have only ever used regular fuel. However my other vehicle, 03 Nissan 350Z, takes premium and I'm wondering if the Mazda would benefit from the same. This pinging noise has been present for many years and after doing some research it sounds like premium fuel may help. Not only that, if premium fuel will help with the life of the car obvious that would be great too.

The Mazda has 175,000 miles and did suffer a broken timing belt about five years ago. Repairs were made and it runs very well considering. The only issue remaining is a scored piston that causes the car to burn oil. I regularly check and add oil.

So if the answer is yes, use premium. My next question is what would be the proper process to introduce premium into the cars life?
