1st time ever at (Carlsbad) dragstrip...

the pro was a trooper - got in 10 passes yesterday - it was fun

*completely* emptied the car: floor mats, spare tire, took out the rear bench seat, etc..

had just filled the car; so i had about 3/4's tank , ran the 205/50/15 Azenis @ 32psi on 12lb 15x6.5 rims...engine has 214K and mods below

1st pass, i just did a simple full throttle run through the gears : 17.821 @ 81.56

on my 2nd run, i dropped the clutch from ~3000rpm : 16.932 @ 83.74
this was against a nice guy in a CRX with an LS 'teg 1.8 non-vtec motor swap. he ran a 14.631 @ 92.88. he told me on my next run i should drop it from around 4500rpm...

....and so that's what i did: got my best 60 ft time all day - 2.420 BUT, i missed third!!! ended up with a 16.884 @ 82.43 i'm pretty sure that could have been my best time if i had nailed third - maybe would have been in the low 16's??

last 2 runs of the day were 2 of the best. went up against a nice guy in a 91 NX2000 w/14" rims. he had 177K on the SR20 w/intake and headers.
so, the 9th run was my best....16.732 @ 83.81. he did a 15.408 @ 91.86. we were dead even on our 60ft times : 2.519 but he just steadily pulled away from me from there.

anyways, i've got a MUCH better idea for how i'm going to do things next time. not disappointed with the results as that was my first time ever to the track and 1st time even dropping the clutch like that! i've just never been one to beat up on my clutch, axles, tires

best reaction time for me was .515
next time will include a tune-up, oem 14" rims, and less gas.... along with a few other goodies hopefully

you drop the cluch at ~3000 rpm and you save close to 1 sec, nice
i dropped mine at ~2000 rpm (it was my first time)

try to run your tire with less psi, ~18 psi, this is what many guy say at the track.

never once shifted to 4th. on every run, i was basically redlining in 3rd at the end of the 1/4.

here's the numbers comparing my best *potential* run (where i missed 3rd) with *what was* my best run:

60ft 2.420 2.519
330ft 6.933 7.058
1/8ET 10.724 10.781
1/8mph 61.89 65.24
1/4ET 16.884 16.732
1/4mph 82.43 83.81

what can i say? still a good motor, but i'm sure its pretty tired with 214K. otherwise, maybe all those mods just don't do a thing.... i'm sure the driver could use some practise/help also

with some practice you should be running around 16.3 @ 88mph per your dyno numbers. So ya need 4 10ths and 5mph

Lower the tire presure a little and maybe use 2800-3000 rev, and feather it ever so slightly. Those wheels are light (the tires aren't though) but you may be getting too much wheel spin too.

I would consider Carlsbad, pretty much sea level.

I use a lot more revs. Otherwise, it bogs heavily. My best 60 foot was 2.35 (at 2700 foot altitude). I'm not dropping the clutch, just coming off quickly.

And tire pressure depends on the tires. 18psi would be appropriate for a drag radial, but most tires have too much sidewall stiffness to take advantage of lowering pressures. And with Falken Azenis, if you go below 25-30 psi, the center of the tire lifts off the pavement, actually reducing grip. You also have to balance out the increased frictional drag of lower tire pressures.

thanks for the suggestions guys

and when i said i was 'dropping' the clutch; i should have said 'slipping' the clutch, as that's closer to what i was doing....

i suppose slipping could be taken as feathering...

I typically rev at ~3000 for autox starts and feather out the clutch. By no means is it as hard as a drag launch or as sticky but i do get a little wheel spin. Presures usually set around 38psi.

If you can knock your 60' times down to 2.0/2.1 seconds than you should be running a real low 16. Good job!
