Mazda3: Unlock trip computer!

Requirements:
- Mazda3 (2006-2007 it seems) with steering wheel audio controls (can be i, s, or Mazdaspeed)

Steps:

- Before you start the engine, hold the CD and AM/FM buttons.
- Start the engine (keep holding the CD and AM/FM buttons).
- After a few seconds, you should see the display read "DIS ON" (driver information system)
- Stop the engine.
- Start the engine again.
- Touch the SET button (':00' button on 2008 including Mazdaspeed3) to see the trip computer.
- Touch the TIME button to see the time.

Your owner’s manual explains how to use the trip computer. With the ignition switch ON, press the SET button (manual says INFO button) to cycle through these 4 options.

- CONSUM CUR: Current fuel economy (calculated every 2 seconds)
- CONSUM AV: Average fuel economy (since battery was connected or resetting the trip computer, displayed every minute, to clear: hold SET for 1+ seconds until the display clears)
- REMNG: Distance you can travel on remaining fuel (must add more than 5.3 gallons to reset it)
- AV: Average vehicle speed (displayed every 10 seconds, to clear: hold SET for 1+ seconds until display clears)

:)

Well, thanks:djcelebra , especially since I gave the formula to a friend who is not on the forum and he did it too. So, its two for one.

Please forgive the cross posting of this message. This subject has been mentioned on all 6 of the forums on which I lurk.

I purchased a 2008 MS3 Sport with a single CD player. I was unable to do the 2 button trick to get DIS ON as others have reported. I got on eBay and purchased what was advertised as a '04-'06 single CD Mazda 3 radio from Discount OEM Radios. I knew from the forums that '04-'05 was not going to work. The picture looked like my radio except black faced instead of the metallic color. I risked the purchase because it was only $19.99 plus $16.00 shipping. I received the radio and noted it had a December '05 build date, making it from an '06 model. It was also a 6 CD changer instead of a single CD as advertised and marked on the paperwork. The faceplate was badly scratched as was the display. I removed the damaged faceplate and display, literally a 4 minute job. I removed the original radio from my 2008 MS3 and swapped in the eBay 2006 radio, re-using the 2008 display and faceplate. I powered it up, did the 2 button trick, DIS ON, power down, power up, push :00 (no "SET" button) and now I have a 6 CD changer with the trip computer in my 2008 non-GT MS3 for a $36 investment. This radio seems to have more power than the single CD and the changer works well. So, from this comes another datapoint, the computer that provides the trip computer function resides in the radio and 2006-2008 faceplates and displays are interchangeable. I hope this helps someone else.

Thanks for this info. I was about to post a question asking if it would work on a 2008 because I couldn't find a "SET" button.

Glad you were able to find a cheap solution!

Thank you that trick

Quick question! Has any one tried to change the fog light wiring so you do not have to have your low deams on to turn on your fog lights. I have a 2008 Black Mica MS3 GT. It would be nice to have that option.

Thanks

lv2speedmy3 April-26th-2008 07:05 AM

I've seen it posted on this forum. They had step by step instructions including photos. I try to find it.

Curios!
By accident, I noticed that by holding down the Info button on my 2008 MS3 for about 3 seconds and letting go, the display changes to the trip computer. No turn on the ignition while holding down any buttons etc...
Does this not work for everyone?

krazyk86cu July-8th-2008 06:47 PM

I have a 04 mazda 3 :(

Bill1426 August-4th-2008 01:21 PM

It doesn't work on my 2008 Mazda 3s 4-Door Sport :tear:

DVSm0nkey714 August-4th-2008 01:39 PM

I have an 05 mazda 3 if I were to purchase an 06-07 radio unit and plug it into my car would this feature work just??

and would the wiring hook up without having to purchase new wiring harnesses?

dijitater59 August-4th-2008 02:17 PM

Yes - just push and hold the "INFO" button for about 3 seconds and the display changes from Clock mode to Trip Computer mode. I discovered that by accident this morning. I have a 2008.5 MS3.

kebmac22 August-21st-2008 09:07 PM

so this doesn't work for a stock 2008 model?

What is this ?? the Unlock Code

Mazda3: Unlock trip computer!

Has everyone got this to work? Does it require a special version of the radio? I have a 2008 3 with a single CD and nothing seems to happen when I hold down the cd and AM/FM buttons. Any info would be great.

madautoxer1 September-17th-2008 03:58 PM

I recently bought a 2008 Hatchback sport. Read the posts, tried it anyway, didn't work. Disappointed, but not surprised. Ordered a Scan Gauge 2, am expecting it on friday. I am thinking of putting in an aftermarket stereo, anyone have any thoughts on this? I figure if I get the aftermarket dash kit, it should be easy to integrate the SC2 into that. Any words of wisdom?

Unlock Trip Computer

I just purchased an '08 Mazda3 i Touring Value edition with the am/fm 6 cd changer. I attempted to unlock my trip computer following these instructions and had no luck.

madautoxer1 September-22nd-2008 12:22 PM

Gave up on the internal trip computer. Picked up a Scan Gauge II. So much more info than the stock computer....totally worth it. $159.99 with free shipping delivered to my door from JC Whitney. Fits perfectly atop the steering column.

Trip Computer - 2009

No luck unlocking the trip computer with the 2-button trick on my new 2009 Mazda 3 i Touring. It seems Mazda figured out what owners were up to. I'm all ears if anyone else has any ideas.

The audio system including dealer installed Multi Disc CD player comes in two configurations, one with DIS and one without DIS. The DIS includes miles remaining on fuel level, average fuel consumption, average speed, current fuel economy, etc. Mazda calls this system Driver Information System (DIS), and it is accessed by pressing the “Info” button. DIS is standard in Mazda 3 GT models.

If your vehicle is equipped with an "Info" button it came from the factory with a trip computer built in, check your owners manual for details.

If your vehicle has only the clock adjustment buttons, then it does not have the hardware for the DIS.

Just proves nobody reads the owners manuals :)

mpg to l/100km switch

Hello Friends,

I need a help. I just bought a 2008 2.3L Mazda 3 from the USA. I live in Europe and we usually measure in meters, kilometers and liters.

Do you know how to change a display of the trip computer so it would measure consuming average not in mpg but in l/100 km. I can see on the display screen IT HAS such an option, i just don't know how to switch it.

thank you very much,

Mike,
Wroclaw, Poland

trip computer

Has anyone installed a 2006 radio in a 2004 Mazda 3 Sport and had the trip computer work?

antonf March-21st-2009 01:02 PM

Does anybody have audio head's firmware?

I think it's basicaly software unlock and it's possible to find a new unlock for Mazda3 08 by inspecting audio head's firmware. Or even unlock DIS by editing firmware... Service centers probably have firmware for Mazda 3 audio head unit... Does anybody have it? Or does anybody know how to read and flash head's firmware?

I own a 2008 Mazda 3 in Singapore, was wondering if the trip meter is available for Mazda Asia models?

brynmyrddinemrys December-31st-2010 12:09 PM

Thanks for this tip! I just unlocked my trip computer on my 2007 Mazda 3i touring... others might be interested to know that I had to alter the steps slightly in order to get it to work. I tried it several times by holding the FM/AM and CD buttons while starting the engine, and nothing happened. When I held the FM/AM and CD buttons while turning the key to the "ON" position (without starting the engine), the "DIS ON" message popped up, and everything worked as expected. :)
