GB: 1st Gen E-Spec Headlight assembly kit

This Group Buy is for New E-spec LHD Glass Headlight Assembly for 1st Generation Proteges.

The quality of the North American Protege headlights have always been an issue. Now that plastic lamps lens have hazed and faded, the problem can become a safety issue.
E-Spec lighting uses the better designed H4 bulbs combined with a sharp light cut off to keep the light pointed to where you need to see, on the road. North American Protege's use DOT standard lamps. DOT spec lights point power into the sky in order to light signage overhead . This results in the loss of the lights intensity and cast. This is what gives that "tunnel" effect in snow and heavy rain conditions. The poor design of our stock 9004 bulbs doesn't help either. Properly aimed, E-spec headlights should not bother oncoming traffic using higher wattage bulbs.

The kit comes complete with all you will need to convert your DOT system over to E-spec. Both 90-92 "Square" and 93-94 323 "slant" styles are available. Note, these are the proper Left Hand Drive versions of the E-spec lamps, unlike JDM Right Hand Drive version that will aim the lights the wrong way, attracting blue and red lights.;)
The optional High Output kit let you run bulbs up to 100/130 watts!
New JDM Clear Corners are also available.

The basic kit includes:
- New Glass Lens Headlamps (please specify "square/slant")
- New Orange Corner Lenses (required - to fit the assembly)
- Corner Harnesses
- 9004 -> H4 Adapters
- H4 Bulbs
- Corner Bulbs
- Shipping in North America

High Output kit includes:
- relay kit
- upgraded Headlight bulbs

Pricing:

Basic E-spec headlight Kit - $395US (9+ orders $350US)

High Output kit - $45US

JDM Clear Corners - $155

*Note: These are E-spec lamps, not DOT approved, you should be aware that in some States these are illegal. In Canada and in the North Western States, I have read that they are legal. Check your local state laws if you have a concern. Using anything over 80 watts is considered "off road use only" ;)
*minmum 6 orders required.

Excellent! Glad you could make this happen Rick, thanks!

I'm in for the whole package :D

Lights
100/130 relay
Clear corners

Question: do I also get the amber corners as well?

rkives June-11th-2003 11:38 AM

The ambers are part of the base kit, so you have the option to change. The 100/130 relay vs standard H4 kit is not interchangable, you have to specify this when you are ordering.

UCSBgeek June-11th-2003 11:40 AM

Am I allowed to know where you are getting these? :)

edit: Oh yeah are they new or used...?

Oh yeah it says new. Hehe. I wonder how much they are used :D

rkives June-11th-2003 11:52 AM

They are coming from Taiwan. From a distributor for Mazda parts.

UCSBgeek June-11th-2003 12:04 PM

If you want to send a PM you should be able to now. :)

beachnut June-11th-2003 12:06 PM

Rick, you'll see this in my PM but I'll put it here too:

I need the slanted headlights, and I definitely want the 100/130 relays. I wanna burn some retinas ;) !

beachnut June-11th-2003 12:46 PM

If you get the 100/130 relay, does it come with 100/130 bulbs?

rkives June-11th-2003 01:01 PM

I will confirm, but I would say yes.

protejay June-11th-2003 07:40 PM

bum bum bum!!

i spent ~$350 for brand new PLASTIC headlights/turn signal lenses a year ago! :( why didn't i know you'd do this then??! ;)

oh well, the plastic ones i bought haven't faded so far....

funkdaddysmack June-11th-2003 09:09 PM

Pics? I'd like to see some clean lenses for once! hehehe....

Will I need to do any mods if I go for the higher wattage bulbs? The new harness that is being sent will not melt with the higher wattage bulbs?

Theses would be the 'slant' style, for my 323 by the way :D

The relays that come with the 100/130 kit insure that your wiring harness is safe. the proper corner harness is included in the kit.

Are they legal? How about with the higher wattage bulbs? Are replacements bulbs hard to find?

mazdaspeedwest June-11th-2003 11:25 PM

very nice!

bad timing, but hopefully i should be a go as well.

square
(i'm still trying to decide if i want the upgraded relay kit for the 100/130w bulbs)

BTW, i would think bulb's are pretty easy to find :) They are standard H4's.

In Washington State and Oregon, I have read that they are legal. This was on Daniel Stern's Automotive lighting FAQ. Running the higher wattage bulbs past 80watts is considered "off road use only"

The higher wattage bulbs are available from NAPA and Performance Limited. So they aren't that hard to find.

funkdaddysmack June-12th-2003 07:38 AM

I'm in for the kit and the 100/130 relay kit. The slant 323 style of course! Sign me up! :D

rkives June-13th-2003 10:18 AM

Just thought I'd mention that I have edited the original Group Buy offer to clarify what is included in the packages.;)

MDTGGI June-13th-2003 12:31 PM

DAMN IT! I HATE BEING POOR!

any chance of these still being for sale around Aug? i know its a ways off but right now school is sucking away my life and money.

in any case, great find dude, i really hope people pull for this, it would be sweet. if anything changes with me in the next few weeks i will let you know, but for no i am a no.

demoninvictus June-14th-2003 01:33 PM

does this conversion basically just bolt on, no difficult wiring, splicing involved? does it include the mounting bracket to mount the headlight housing to the car? i'd be interested in this as well, provided that it's not until at LEAST late august when the sale goes down and as long as it can answer yes to the two questions above. wil asked us for 80 bucks for clear corners 2 weeks before the sale went down... 400+ bucks is a bit hard on my budget, but i would be more than willing to do this if the sale goes down late august. and isn't this basically a method for HID conversion if you get the high output kit? sounds very promising and would definately be a step up from what i've got.
peace

Hamilton June-14th-2003 03:50 PM

those headlights sound sweet! :D But their just a little above my buget...

itzkcatz June-14th-2003 11:27 PM

Count me in for some square ones. Do u have pics of the jdm clear courners? .I should have money this month ..Jon

These lamps are for BG series cars. They will fit in the standard location and use the same bolts as you currenly use. They are OEM, just not North American OEM. Take a look at the first picture that I posted. There is a slight difference in the headlight/corner lamp dimensions compared to your car.
There will be minimal wire splicing in the installation.

These are not High Intensity Discharge (HID) bulbs they are still Halogen (filiment).
The advantage is, you move from using crappy 9004 bulbs, which in low beam, can only produces 700 LUMENS to the better designed H4s. This of course is based on "clean plastic lenses" The stock H4 bulb produces 1000 LUMENS in low beam and 1650 LUMENS in high. Due to the "glass" lens in this kit, you can expect it to stay that way. The stock 9004 can only produces 1200 LUMENS in Highbeam .

The High Output kit simply gives you the level of saftey required to allow you to run the H4Overwatt bulbs in your e-spec headlamps.
The H4Overwatt bulb can produce up to 1820 LUMENS in lowbeam and 3550:eek: in Highbeam.

HID requires a ballast to create an arc and with just 35watts can produce 2800 LUMENS.

demoninvictus June-16th-2003 04:32 AM

ok ok, i can figure out the wiring and shit for this eventually. now what do you mean by the dimensions are slightly different? the headlight housing does look slightly smaller in that first pic (i think it's just me), however, it's hard to tell with the 'eyebrows' he has on that car. i'm still interested..
peace

beachnut June-16th-2003 10:52 AM

Hey Rick, your mailbox is full so I'll post my questions here. Slightly off the topic, but what are the chances of getting some of those eyebrows? Also, do you have a full frontal pic of the black 323, particularly the front bumper? I think it's the bumper I'm looking for ....

rkives June-16th-2003 11:18 AM

Here is the link to the full front of the GTX in the Netherlands. http://home.hetnet.nl/~pzj70/april_1.htm
Here is a link to her site:Monica's 323GTX

Notice that the corners wrap around past the hood line. With the portion of the lamp past the hood line "clear".

I will see about the the eyebrows, but I am afraid he does not have any GTX bumpers.

Rick

P.S. I cleared my PM box, is ther any way to to tell how full it is?

rkives June-17th-2003 09:00 PM

Here is a picture of what the JDM Clear Corners look like.
http://images.cardomain.com/member_i...25_90_full.jpg
If you wanted to go totally clear, it is fairly easy to seperate the lamp and clear the amber.

They look real nice, but not $155 nice :D

demoninvictus June-19th-2003 04:17 AM

whre have i heard that statement before... couldn't have been you funk... or maybe it was :p i will admit, i am willing to go in for the e-spec conversion, not till late august unfortunately, but simply put, 400 is rich enough for my blood, plus, i know i can find somebody out there that i can get $70 bucks from to buy my existing clears, but another $155 ontop of the 400... heaven forbid i'm in a minor fender bender, where will i get the money to replace the corners, let alone the 400 dollar headlights. i'm in for the lights, just not for the clear corners.
peace

Whats the status on this buy?..Jon

TheMAN June-27th-2003 08:38 PM

it nearly brings tears to my eyes to see people actually wanting to get true lighting upgrades instead of that ghetto blue light bulb and hid upgrade crap

too bad none of the 2nd and 3rd gen people have pulled their heads out of their asses to get that shit yet...

We are at 9 possibly 10, so the lower price of $350 for the base kit is in effect. :D

I am currently waiting for date info from the supplier.

UCSBgeek July-22nd-2003 03:21 AM

I'm gonna try and get my brother to get these for my birthday...is it still available for a little bit? :)

Davard July-22nd-2003 10:35 PM

I would like some also. How soon will they be in? Mine are yellow almost beyond the ability to whiten. Oh, this is for the square ones for a '90 Protege.

I was looking for this, but between getting married and the honeymoon, I was away for awhile (there were 1400 new messages when I got back).

So, how much for just the relay kit (with the standard bulbs)?

rkives July-23rd-2003 01:06 AM

Davard - Congratz on getting married!;) I have to ask about the relay with stock lights cost wise.

Protoss/Chastan, The lights will be in near the end of August, so the final orders have to be placed by middle of August. I hope you'll be able to get in on them!

trahma July-23rd-2003 01:54 AM

Provided my Protege search goes well this weekend, you can count me in for these lights. I'm a visibility nut, it's the first thing I do to every car I have :D

rkives July-29th-2003 01:02 PM

I just heard back from the supplier, the Group Buy has to close at the end of this month. He has to place the order on Friday Aug 1st, So final numbers are now required.

Sorry for the short notice.

If my PM is full please send email to rkvair66@hotmail.com.

Rick
